Lin Ping?

[edit]

I just visited the zoo in Chiang Mai and all the signs there identify the panda as "Lin Ping". Also, I bought home some postcards printed up by the zoo and they also call the panda Lin Ping. Everyone we spoke to in Thailand called the panda Lin Ping. Could someone please include a redirect, so that people searching for Lin Ping can find this page?

Also, I'm not sure it's accurate to say the panda will be "returned" to China, since it was born in Thailand and has never been to China before.

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lafong (talkcontribs) 06:58, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lin Ping not Lin Bing

[edit]

Although the Pinyin version of this panda's name could be "Lin2 Bing1," the most accurate way to write this panda name should be "Lin Ping" as its name derived from the Ping River, which is a name of the river in Thai language not Chinese.

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear, concise and understandable to an appropriately broad audience, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
    First impressions:
  • Her birthday should be included in the parenthesis, like: (Thai: หลินปิง, Chinese: 林冰, lit. 'Forest of Ice'; born 27 May 2009).  Done
  • Lin Ping should be bolded because it's another name for the subject.  Done
  • Per WP:SEAOFBLUE, "For a geographical location expressed as a consecutive comma-separated sequence of two or more territorial units, link only the first unit". So delink the countries next to a town (Sichuan, China; Chaing Mai, Thailand).  Done
  1. Everything else looks okay. I fixed some things myself.
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
    all guidelines above are followed
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    refs are laid out correctly
    B. Reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose):
    C. It contains no original research:
    Spot Check here
Above is the spot check. There are some issues present. You can respond to them either here or at that page.
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
Earwig gives 2.0%, so no copyvios here.
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
  • You should mention that the naming contest had over half a million entries (A public competition to name the cub drew more than a half-million entries, which have been whittled down to four finalists. The name will be chosen next month.)[1]
  • Include how the public reacted to Lin Bing's birth (Newspapers have reported the baby panda's milestones and the public's reaction, including a giant cake measuring 4 feet by 5 feet (1.2 meters by 1.6 meters) donated by a Chiang Mai bakery to celebrate her one-month birthday. Some Chiang Mai hotels are offering special "meet the panda" rates for the next few months.)[1] (The birth of Lin Ping brought immense attention to the giant panda family, turning them into celebrities that people eagerly followed. This led to the creation of the reality show "Lin Ping: The Reality," which later evolved into the Panda Channel, a 24-hour reality show broadcasting Lin Ping's life, showcasing her development and the story of the giant panda family—Chuang Chuang, Lin Hui, and Lin Ping—for nearly three years.) [2]
  • Everything is  Done by nom
  • The lead should be expanded to summarize all the main points of the article, like her mating and offspring and how she is considered the property of China.
  1. B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
  2. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each:
Article is neutral. It doesn't lean towards one viewpoint than another.
  3. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
    No edit wars present
  4. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
Image has a valid CC license and caption.
  5. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
I have put the article on hold. Please fix the issues above.
Everything has been fixed. I will now pass the article. Good job!

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Overall, the article is well written. I could not access ref #12 but I will assume good faith.

1. The current hook is good, but Launchballer's proposed hook is also interesting. OpalYosutebito, what is your idea on Launchballer's hook?

2. Commenting on the Qi Zai QPQ, I think WP:DYKCITE only applies to references in the article, not the source given in the DYK nom. The current Qi Zai article does not have bare link problems. KimYubin (talk) 14:54, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Launch's idea sounds good to me! :) - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat15:01, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Great! Launchballer, Opal also supports your hook. Can you review the panda porn DYK nom and make these into a double nom? KimYubin (talk) 15:17, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
That article is new and long enough and I see no issues with Earwig nor with any other aspect of the article, but the QPQ seems rather cursory (I'm sure you've checked length, newness, QPQ, and Earwig, but you do need to spell that fact out), as does the Qi Zai QPQ. I think you should go to those and expand the reviews.--Launchballer 16:10, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
