Requested move 11 August 2026
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Based on WP:COMMONNAME, as noted, we do not follow official names. Historical significance is a relevant factor, as is WP:NAMECHANGES - a demonstration of significant usage in English-language reliable sources would be needed to override the current name, which we are lacking here. As this only just happened this month, it is too soon for us to follow the change. ASUKITE 12:37, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
Kerala → Keralam – I am requesting to change the title of this page to Keralam because the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Act, 2026 is now enacted which has formally changed the official name of the state from Kerala to Keralam. The legal name of the state has changed into Keralam, so officially it became Keralam. Iamcarbonmatter (talk) 09:21, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- It is passed https://www.deccanchronicle.com/southern-states/kerala/lok-sabha-passes-kerala-alteration-of-name-bill-2026-seeking-to-change-the-states-name-to-keralam-1978321 Iamcarbonmatter (talk) 09:35, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- It is not advisable to change the page. The official name Keralam should remain in the records, while the English name Kerala can be used, as it respects the brand and is adaptable within the Indian grammatical tradition of the anasvara. To honor literature, Kerala(m) could be a fitting choice, but given the rules of anasvara, it is preferable to retain the term Kerala in English. This is why many favored Kerala in the past, not just for the interests of a political party. The official name should be preserved in the records, allowing Kerala to serve as the brand. - Oppose - We use the Common names in English for our articles, not the "Official names". We will only change the name when it can be shown to be the Common name in English, which will usually take some time. As an example: Bangalore was renamed Bengaluru on 1 November 2014, and after 16 move discussions we eventually renamed our page on 27 November 2024. - Arjayay (talk) 10:17, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- It eventually changed right, then what's the point of holding up Iamcarbonmatter ♥ xoxo ✦ 07:51, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

- Support. The article should be moved to Keralam, as the name change from Kerala to Keralam has now been approved through the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, passed by both houses of the Indian Parliament. This is no longer merely a proposal by the state government; it is an official change in the state's legal name and is supported by government sources. Asifalinair (talk) 04:37, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- Wikipedia does not operate on official names of places. For example, though it is officially the "Republic of Türkiye", the Wikipedia article is still titled Turkey. Check out the Common Name policy for more information. AsaQuathern (talk) 01:04, 18 August 2026 (UTC)

- Oppose. Very clear common name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:56, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose. No case to answer. The nomination and all arguments in favour so far are all based on the official name. The current name is the common name in English. Andrewa (talk) 09:49, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
