Inclusion of Vote on Anti-Trans Policy

[edit]

Hello, I seem to be engaged in somewhat of an edit war over Ossoff's views on the LGBTQ community. The text included was as follows.

"Ossoff voted in favour of S. 1071, a bill that restricted the rights of trans servicewomen to compete in sports at military academies, as well as rules that erased non-binary identities. It was the first federal ban on trans athletes." with sources cited. This was removed allegedly synthesising research. I disagree It's a simple statement of fact that he voted for this bill which had anti-trans policies in it. I wonder if someone could weigh in on a phrasing that would stick, as I feel it's very important to include on this page. Link to revision. Jmdfry (talk) 11:28, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

What we need is a reliable secondary source that covers this specific vote. Role call votes aren't sufficient criteria alone for including a vote, as members of Congress take hundreds if not thousands of votes in their careers. We need supporting sourcing to show that any particular vote is noteworthy enough to include here. Marquardtika (talk) 21:41, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Would this be considered an appropriate source for this purpose?

Citizenship

[edit]

Moving this comment to talk page from the article as it queries the source, however it seems the underlying question leans even further into what the citizenship status actually is. I changed {{Clarify}} to {{Dubious}}, because 'clarify' isn't quite the correct method of bringing up the issue about if or why the source article uses potentially ambiguous language about Austrialian citizenship, because we can only write in wikivoice what the source says, not interpret an answer based on personal knowledge. (I know nothing that can shed light on Australian citizenship or immigration from there to the USA in whatever year that was.)

"Clarify|reason=The source is really unclear on whether Ossoff is still a citizen of Australia. It says his citizenship "lapsed", but Australian citzenships don't lapse. I suspect Ossoff is still a dual national but simply has an expired passport or something|date=September 2026. — NickCT

Preferably discuss on this talk page, rather than in the article itself.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 17:55, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Well thanks! I don't really have an opinion on whether the factoid is "dubious" or simply "needs clarification", but if "dubious" is your take, I'm on board. For the record, Ossoff didn't immigrate. His mom did. Ossoff was US born and "inherited" his Australian citizenship through his mom.
US citzenships works the same way. I should know, cause I was born in London but was born a US citizen by virtue of the fact that my mom was American. As far as I know, US and Australian citizenship are the same in the sense that they're almost impossible to "lose". The notable exception of course is folks who choose to renounce their citizenship, which both Americans and Australians can do. NickCT (talk) 18:27, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not that it's really relevant to this conversation, but as an interesting sidenote here; if Ossoff were the next US president (a possibility not totally outside the realm of reason), he would be the first dual citizen to occupy the role. NickCT (talk) 18:31, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
