I continue to see the article referring to Maldonado as "Exotic". His nickname/stagename is "Joe Exotic", and it's OK to call him that. But his name is not "Exotic", it is "Joe Exotic" or Joseph Maldonado or Maldonado, not "Exotic" by itself. — BarrelProof (talk) 00:50, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
See this old Talk thread. The problem is that he's also been named Joseph Maldonado-Passage and Joseph Schreibvogel, it's unclear when he started or ceased using each name, and most reliable sources call him "Exotic". Most Wikipedia articles about people primarily known by a pseudonym—the classic example being Leon Trotsky—use the pseudo-surname throughout. That old Talk page discussion did not conclude that it is OK to call him "Exotic" (by itself). In fact, it showed that reliable sources such as NBC and ABC use his legal surname, "Maldonado-Passage". The Bureau of Prisons also appears to confirm that his legal surname is "Maldonado-Passage". For some reason I'm not aware of, the "-Passage" part of his legal surname was not recently included in the opening sentence. I have restored it. I don't know much about Trotsky. The first source cited in the article is from KFOR-TV, and it refers to him as "Maldonado". I have seen no evidence that most reliable sources call him "Exotic" (by itself). One problem that I perceive is that Maldonado-Passage is treated as a light-hearted curiosity by many reliable sources. He has attracted attention from lower quality sources, and I believe some ordinarily higher quality sources have somewhat relaxed their tone and degree of rigor when discussing him. — BarrelProof (talk) 19:10, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
