Criticism section has issues

The contents of the 'Criticism' section - and therefore the entire section - is unnecesary based on the legitimacy of the citations and lack of impartiality.

The cited source is merely a website aggregating random Twitter users, none of whom are authoratitive. The second citiation is highly questionable on grounds of impariality, coming from a former rival player who recently admitted to lying in his newspaper column. If this type of addition is allowed then the majority of football player articles would have something similar - 'opposition fans and former players criticise Player X' is too trivial to warrant entire sections.

I would also question the motivation for this section being added, as the user responsible has a history of adding criticisms to player articles based on rivalry rather than any serious merit. Latino Buggerveil (talk) 10:13, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. This has fairly decent sourcing for a football controversy. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 10:52, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

FIFA World Cup 2022

Adding this might be needed. Aside from the penalty miss against France, it's important to note what a small influence he had on the team. His goalscoring form was poor during the tournament. Assisting wasn't too bad, but that's not a strikers' job. 195.213.124.182 (talk) 10:08, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Season 2022-23

The text "Kane broke the record the following game when he scored the only goal in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, becoming the first player to score 185 goals in the Premier League for a single club", is a bit clunky. If it was notable that he was the first player to score 185 PL goals for a single club, then it suggests that scoring 186/7/8 etc, should be equally notable. Might I suggest something along the lines of, "Kane broke the record the following game when he scored the only goal in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers". 2A02:8084:26E0:AA00:A6B5:F9D1:D5C6:A39C (talk) 10:28, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Notability of list of international goals scored article?

With his four goals in the first half of today's match against San Marino, he is only 5 behind Rooney's all time record for England and only 1 behind Jack Charlton, both of whom have articles for their international goals scored. Should we start on an article for his international goals now? It seems like it's now common to do that for every nation's top scorer and barring something catastrophic, he should eclipse Rooney's record in 2022. Maybe we start a draft now? Thanks. in career statistics the subtotal bar (which includes bundesliga and championship contributions) is only reflecting bundersliga contributions, therefore the 2 sub totals (prem and other) do not add up to the lowest level values in the table. You need to add in a 3rd subtotal line for championship / league one contributions 57.140.20.51 (talk) 08:24, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

To explain why the table looks as it is right now, these total rows are for the same team (Tottenham and Bayern Munich are the only two teams which need them since he hay played for more than a season). The other four teams he has played for were for at most one season so they don't need these total rows. Adding totals for each division participated does not apply. What's going on with the "Regarded as [one of] the best x of y" summations in footballer article ledes?

The opening paragraph of the article used to state:

Kane is regarded as one of the best players in the world and one of the best strikers of his generation.

This is still entirely supportable (arguably more so than ever given that he just placed within the top 10 at the Ballon D'Or and won multiple Europe-wide awards last season), but I understand the contentiousness of these sentences and their strange ubiquitousness. I've seen this construct removed from a few footballers' pages now, but it's very inconsistently applied. Is this some new policy? How is it to be applied? And should we be removing it from every footballer's page? What are the guidelines here?

If anything, the current lede understates Kane's level of standing within the footballing world, especially relative to other footballers who haven't had this wording extirpated. Elliott-AtomicInfinity (talk) 03:56, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

For you to remove this description implies that it must be a universal rule to remove such words as "among the greatest". I would suggest using the term "among the most skilled" or "among the most successful" as alternate descriptions. Certainly, the term "the greatest" is not a term with a defined meaning.
I suspect that there will be some upset people when we remove such descriptions universally. Tennisedu (talk) 05:48, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
Tennisedu It is absolutely fine to use "the best" or "the greatest" if there are multiple reliable sources using that term. This is why your changes have been reverted at the Ronaldo and Messi articles, where there are such sources (the phrasing there has been the subject of much discussion as well). Equally, if you're going to change it to "most skilled" or "most successful", then you'll need to source that phrasing as well. Black Kite (talk) 09:06, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
All terms such as "the greatest" or "the greatest in the world" have already been long since removed from other sports articles such as tennis, where there was extensive discussion about this issue a few years ago. It was determined that the term was essentially without any defined meaning and was simply a "puff" term and should not appear in the lead. For example, in the Djokovic article, the term "most successful" is used. Further, you are suggesting that footnotes be used in the lead to support this? That is another issue of contention. If the statements are supported by references in the body of the article, it is not necessary to use them in the lead. In the final analysis, we should not have a different set of rules for each sport. Tennisedu (talk) 16:01, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
I suspect that using tennis as an example to change previously consensus-agreed wording in a different sport is doomed to failure. But regardless, if you can gain consensus to change the wording of such articles, then please start a discussion. Black Kite (talk) 22:26, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
We have already had that discussion in the tennis articles, and all references to "the greatest" have been expunged from Wikipedia tennis articles. I cannot understand why this is not already accepted for soccer articles. Sports is sports. Tennisedu (talk) 07:17, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
I now see that for the baseball and the golf articles, terms such as "one of the greatest" are commonly used. It looks like tennis articles are just different.Tennisedu (talk) 09:12, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
Indeed. I would again make clear though, that such wording should only be used where there are multiple reliable sources using it. Such articles are likely to be few and far between. Black Kite (talk) 12:40, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
