Multiple problems

Owner of the company

Why is there no mention of Alphabet Inc. until one scrolls to the bottom of the page? It should either be in the short-info box or in the first three paragraphs or both. It is of high public interest to have people know who Google belongs to, especially as Alphabet is commonly being referred to as "Google" - very contrary to how people, but news outlets specifically, concern themselves to say or write "Meta" instead of "Facebook" and how some put importance on how X/Twitter is called.

I can't make the change (yet) on English Wikipedia, so I hope someone else does it. EntenhausenerKurier (talk) 12:17, 19 April 2026 (UTC)

"Google" is the common name for the multinational corporation, not just the search engine. Furthermore, the rationale that "Google" is now primarily the name for a specific application/website lacks consensus and backing from reliable secondary sources.   "Microsoft Word" is normally in full called that as is "Las Vegas" which I'm not sure I've even heard called just "Vegas". NATURAL does require the term to be common used as opposed to just being reasonably clear what the topic is like New York (state) not being at New York State.   It might be just an American/regional thing, but everyone calls it "Vegas" in real life except in formal writing; the same is true for Google (Search), (Microsoft) Word, (Google) Chrome, New York (City), (Walt) Disney World, Pound (Sterling), etc. Wikipedia uses the extended form for these terms for two reasons: first, "common name" doesn't mean colloquially, it means in reliable sources, which are likely to use the formal name (and indeed, you can easily find sources that use "Google Search"); second, even if the colloquial name were deemed common, it is already taken by another primary topic, so WP:NATURAL calls for the use of the longer but unambiguous name. As you noted, NATURAL doesn't require a name to be the most common, only "common" enough — albeit not as commonly as the preferred-but-ambiguous title — and trust me, the bar is very low: just look at association football, a name virtually no one uses.   I would be interested to know what sources like encyclopedias use, Britannica doesn't appear to have a separate article so isn't much help there. Yes longer names like Kingston upon Hull and Apple Inc. might not be that common in everyday useage but do appear to be formal names used by the likes of Britannica. Google Search uses natural disambiguation and is perfectly recognizable, even if it is not the most common name. Everyone uses Google to refer first and foremost to the search engine and refers to the search engine as Google (after all, it's even entered the vernacular as the verb "to google" - I'm sure not even the opposers above believe that verb refers to the company!).   Absolutely nobody calls it Google Search is absolutely false. Plenty of people, and sources, use "Google Search" to refer to, well, Google Search. I would go so far as to say that Google should be moved to Google (company) and the search engine should be moved to Google as the clear primary topic is, sorry to not mince words, but a ludicrous idea and unlikely to be taken seriously if proposed. The company, with its 9+ products with more than a billion users and its trillion-dollar market cap, is clearly a thousand times more notable than the search engine.   Every case is different and evaluated individually. For example, before its name was changed to Meta (which itself is naturally disambiguated as Meta Platforms even though the common name is just "Meta"), the product was the primary topic of Facebook and the company was naturally disambiguated as Facebook, Inc.; meanwhile, the man himself is the primary topic of Ralph Lauren while his company is naturally disambiguated as Ralph Lauren Corporation; but Netscape and DeepSeek the companies are the primary topic while their products, Netscape (web browser) and DeepSeek (chatbot), are parenthetically disambiguated because NATURAL isn't available. For Google, I can say with confidence that the company is the primary topic and the search engine should be disambiguated, which this RM affirms; the disagreement here (before Necrothesp mentioned his proposal) concerns the form of disambiguation, and our guidelines clearly call for NATURAL over parenthetical.   That would be the preferable disambiguation iff the company were not the PT, correct. That's we currently do with {{Google LLC}} because {{Google}} was taken (note that template names don't indicate PT because they de facto follow a first-come, first-served basis).
