Is there a reason this incident isn't mentioned in the article? I feel like it was one that affected him pretty profoundly? There's no mention of horses or Newmarket at all. Valereee (talk) 15:22, 6 October 2024 (UTC)

George vs Prince George

I understand that his father was also named George, but the article mostly refers to him as "the King", while George IV is called "George" in both the third paragraph of the lead and the start of the early life section. It is unclear why that is acceptable there but considered confusing elsewhere. Many passages already use phrasing such as "George and his father", which makes the distinction clear. Because this is George IV's article, readers know who is meant. George III's grandfather was also named George, yet he is still referred to simply as "George" throughout his own article without causing confusion, so there is no obvious reason for treating this page differently. For example:

• "Acting on George's authority, the Whig leader Charles James Fox declared that the story was a calumny." I don't find it clear which George is meant.
• "His father refused to assist him, forcing him to quit Carlton House and live at Fitzherbert's residence. In 1787, George's political allies proposed to relieve his debts with a parliamentary grant." The preceding sentence relates to King George, so in ordinary grammar, the George in the second sentence also relates to the King, which is incorrect.
• "George's brother Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, declared that George ..." Unclear. You have to know beforehand that Frederick is George III's son not brother.

These are just three examples. The changes were wholesale and led to unclear text. As I said in the edit summary, copy edits need to be done with greater care. DrKay (talk) 15:34, 14 November 2025 (UTC)

George IV. was not the first Monarch to visit Ireland since Richard II.

I checked the source, which says "George IV began his ten-year reign with a visit to Ireland, the first state visit to be paid to Ireland by a British monarch since the reign of Richard II." I presume De-la-Noy is ignoring the later visits because they were not state visits. While the text is verifiable, per Wikipedia:Verifiability, verifiability does not guarantee inclusion. Through the consensus process, editors may decide to omit content or move it to a different article. DrKay (talk) 15:30, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

1. Richard II's "state visits" actually seem to have been military campaigns (which I'm not sure should be classified as a state visit).
2. If those of Richard II qualify as state visits, Jacob II and William III's "visit" should also qualify.

The article on state visit says: "A state visit is a formal visit by the head of a sovereign country (or representative of the head of a sovereign country) to another sovereign country". So he can't have made a state visit to Ireland, which was part of the U.K. at that time (and even before the Union, English monarchs were monarch or lord of Ireland). The source probably had a bit of bias against British monarchs, counting Ireland as foreign soil even though the whole of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom back then. I think the correct terminology would be "official visit". With that in mind, I think it should be mentioned that James II and William III had indeed visited Ireland because right now the article is giving the impression that no monarch had been to Ireland since Richard II. I think we can change "state visit" to "official visit" and add any additional info as a footnote. Keivan.f^Talk 14:06, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
