[edit]Anyone know German or Polish? This article is much more extensive in those two languages' version of Wikipedia. That might help flesh out this page a bit. DavidRF (talk) 06:00, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
German and Czech. The article in Polish is a one-liner stub. 73.168.5.183 (talk) 03:14, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Rewrite, 23 Jan 2026
[edit](Originally in draft talk:furiant): Hi there folks! First time rewriting an article in enwiki, so correct me if stuff hadn't been done right,
I'm hereby submitting this draft as a rewrite for Furiant. The existing article is a practical stub, and I want to get it to B class in the very least, and please tell me what's missing to GA and A class too if you're willing it.
As written in the draft, it was written together with a hewiki draft for a new corresponding article. Huge thanks to my hewiki mentor user:Funcs who reviewed and corrected the hebrew draft, as well as to user:Chaotic Enby and my enwiki mentor user:Sdkb for bearing with my annoying technical questions

Initial comments
[edit]An interesting article, containing much I didn't know and have been glad to learn. Some comments on the prose. I see from your user page that English is not your mother tongue and, that being so, I am much impressed by your admirable use of the language and these minor quibbles are not of any great consequence:
- "czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák" – in all varieties of English known to me adjectives and nouns denoting places are capitalised. This should certainly be Czech, not czech.
- "the origin of its name is under controversy" – strange phrasing: one might expect something like "the origin of its name is a matter of controversy"
- "'Furie' was proposed as well in German cicrles" – circles?
- "A dance in the aforementioned name" – a bit pompous and old-fashioned: "A dance in that name" would be shorter and better.
- "Quote box: "In folk music: Sedlák, sedlák, sedlák etc"" – the box is singularly pointless unless your readers have some idea what the words mean. A footnote with a translation would do.
- "the word Furiant can even describe fast folktunes" – the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Chambers Dictionary both hyphenate "folk-tunes" and if we're in AmE, Merriam Webster makes "folk tune" two separate words.
- "three bisyllabic words" – there is no such word as "bisyllabic" in the King's English, and though I see Merriam Webster admits it, the main entry for "consisting of two syllables" is "disyllabic", which is the word you want, I suggest.
- "during the characteristic hemiola" – you've linked the term in the lead but this first mention in the main text could do with a link too
- "That is the earliest known folksong that's explicitly called a furiant" – see MOS:N'T
- "the most recognizable furiant folktune" – hyphen or two separate words, please
- "the composers smetana and dvorak" – both composers are in need of capital letters and their various diacriticals.
- "sometimes described as firey" – I think you mean "fiery"
- "Image caption: the date format needs tweaking: I have the impression you are aiming at AmE rather than BrE (the spelling of "meter" suggests as much) in which case you want "September 3, 2023" with no "rd"
- "based on a real folktune" – needs hyphen
- "Dvořák wrote his seventh Poetic Tone Picture Op. 85 as furiant" – missing "a" before "furiant"?
- "hungarian folktunes" – the adjective needs capitalising and the noun requires a hyphen or splitting in two.
- "a dramatic, rising meloda" – should that be "melody"?
- "afterwhich the timpani and violas play" – "afterwhich" should be "after which"
Those are my few comments. Nothing to cause alarm and despondency there. Over to you. Tim riley talk 14:08, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- One other point I neglected to transfer here from my scrawled notes: there's a fair bit of WP:OVERLINK to everyday terms such as dancer, draft, irresponsibility, melody, opera, piano and unfaithfulness, all of which I suggest you unlink. And another point (sorry about this): for the title of a play or opera such as The Bartered Bride, the definite article should be capitalised and the title italicised at every mention. Tim riley talk 14:36, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Tim riley omg thank you so much for the review! You might've noticed a few batches left from my Hebrew draft (which I originally kept as a draft for it to see this review and fix it, but I got impatient a few days ago זםז. I suppose all good things arrive at a point זuז). Indeed 'under controversy' is a literal mindfog over 'תחת מחלוקת', I admit English adpositions evade me yet still and yet I could catch it had I been more careful.
- Circles... it's a presque-vu, I know what I tried to describe, and yet, I can't bring myself to find a better suited way to describe vague schools of thought. Tyrell (2001) himself used 'German theorists' instead, in a more active sentence, and I kept encountering the same attributions to Germans in other sources, without a clear name to connect to that claim. Not sure what to do with that sentence, what would you do?
- "Circles" is fine, but you need to correct the spelling. Tim riley talk 15:36, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- I thought I should add a translation, but decided against it in the end on grounds of my inability to translate off Czech. I'll contact the guy I bugged for translating the sources again, maybe I'll manage something. I still think there's reason for the song itself to appear in the article given that it keeps being referred to all across the article.
- I think the box is fine, but if you can conjure up a translation and put it in a footnote that will be very helpful indeed. I shan't make this a sticking point for GAN. (You could always fall back on Google Translate, courtesy of which I have discovered that you are a Prognathodon.) Tim riley talk 15:36, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Added a translation which the czech guy thought was correct, do you think it fits? פרוגנתודון (talk) 19:52, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Excellent! Tim riley talk 20:12, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- In any regards to EngVar, I need the eyes of a native of any variant, be it even Indian English. I have no own variant, but will try to default to AmEng. If you find any violation of that dialect tell me please.
- I think your AmE is now fine throughout. Tim riley talk 15:36, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- The article Syllable listed bisyllabic as a synonym for disyllabic, will correct.
- Regarding '"the most recognizable furiant folktune" – hyphen or two separate words, please.' I... don't quite get the problem, sir. Can you please explain?
- The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Chambers Dictionary both hyphenate "folk-tune"; Merriam Webster makes "folk tune" two separate words.
- The capitalizations (and also the lack of diacritics too) somehow evaded me entirely. Corrected.
- Regarding the date format in the image, I kept it as September 3rd to keep in line with the rest of the article, see May 30th 1866 and September 25th 1870 in the same section. Do you think I should change it all across the article then?
- The others were corrected in accordance with your very kind notes. o‿נo
- In truth, I wanted to submit the article for review more for the pair of eyes to catch my mistakes and alert me to them, rather than for the title itself. If you'd be so kind, might I ask you to be strict with me? פרוגנתודון (talk) 20:02, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- Removed the overlinks.
- So, italicization I understand, but why must the definite article of The Bartered Wife be capitalized as well amidst a sentence? פרוגנתודון (talk) 20:06, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- Simply the usual convention among writers of English. An opening definite or indefinite article is part of the title and needs capitalising. I think AmE speakers would be even more insistent on this than BrE speakers. Tim riley talk 15:36, 23 February 2026 (UTC)

Well done! Tim riley talk 20:12, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, addressed the last problems you raised: ordinals on dates (and generally per MOS:ORDINALS) changed, the Bartered Bride -> The Bartered Bride and the typos have been corrected. I'm glad you found it sufficient
