When and why did linguists stop using handwritten IPA?

Linguists still take field-notes, and I'm willing to bet that some of those notes are handwritten on paper, rather than typed into a portable device using a keyboard or an IPA input app. If that's true, there's still a need for a standard way of handwriting IPA, to help linguists produce and read such transcriptions effectively.
Is there documentary evidence of the reasons for these changes, or of a discussion among linguists justifying them? yoyo (talk) 14:06, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
