Due weight, neutrality and balance issues with the three styles of Chhau (Purulia, Seraikella, Mayurbhanj)

The article currently gives significantly more weight and prominence to Purulia Chhau compared to the other two equally recognised styles — Mayurbhanj Chhau and Seraikella Chhau. This appears to violate Wikipedia’s policies on neutral point of view (WP:NPOV) and due weight (WP:DUE).

Specific problems

1. Order of presentation Purulia Chhau is almost always listed first in the lead, in the “Three styles” section, and in most descriptions. There is no scholarly consensus that Purulia is the oldest or “original” form. Reliable sources describe the three styles as parallel developments with shared roots and no proven chronological primacy. Suggestion: Use consistent alphabetical order (Mayurbhanj, Purulia, Seraikella) or neutral geographic/state order throughout the article.
2. Etymology and historical origins The article mentions the derivation from “Chhauni” (military camp), but it is brief and somewhat buried. The stronger and widely accepted connection is to the martial training and mock combat rehearsals of Paika warriors in eastern India, with roots traceable to the period of the Gajapati Empire and later princely patronage. This martial-folk origin applies to the entire Chhau tradition. Reliable sources for etymology (“Chhau” from “Chhauni”):

3. 19th-century patronage Mayurbhanj Chhau received important royal recognition and development in the early-to-mid 19th century under Maharaja Jadunath Bhanja (r. 1823–1863), who introduced Rama Leela elements that helped shape the form. Similar princely patronage existed for Seraikella. Sources:

Proposed improvements (all easily verifiable)

• Present the three styles in consistent alphabetical or geographic order.
• Expand the shared history section to clearly note that Chhau evolved from “Chhauni” martial rehearsals of Paika warriors in the eastern Indian region (with connections to the Gajapati period), and that no single style has been proven to be the first.
• Balance the images: aim for roughly equal representation from Mayurbhanj, Purulia, and Seraikella (including at least one strong maskless Mayurbhanj performance and one Seraikella masked performance).
• Ensure the lead, infobox, and overall structure reflect the equal status given by UNESCO and Indian cultural institutions (Sangeet Natak Akademi, etc.).

This is not about promoting one style over another. It is simply about ensuring fair and proportionate coverage for all three recognised forms under Wikipedia’s policies.

If you are using LLM in this talk page or hoping to use / have used it in mainspace, please refrain from it. It is to be avoided. Coming to the point, I do not see any significant tilt towards 'Purulia Chhau' in the article as far as the prose is concerned. Only that the 5th paragraph of the "Features of Chhau" section is largely about it. As for arrangements (ordering), it is not a case of DUE / UNDUE, but best left to the judgement of the editors, typically alphabetical in most cases. You in your edit didn't use aphabetical order either, whether the dance form or the region, hence looked like a blatant POV push from a Odisha-related POV. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 13:21, 24 March 2026 (UTC)

In the Chhau Mask section, there is not a single line about Seraikella Chhau, which also uses masks (they are smaller in size than Purulia masks). In this section its written as "Purulia Chhau Dance is listed on UNESCO's world heritage list of dances." So there a Question as well. UNESCO heritage is for All forms of Chhau dance just not Purulia.

In the Etymology section, both Mayurbhanj and Seraikella Chhau accept that the word "Chhau" comes from "Chhauni" (barracks of soldiers/military camp). However, the article presents it mainly as the opinion of scholars like Sitakant Mohapatra.

If you look at the gallery section, there is just one image from Mayurbhanj Chhau and the rest are from Purulia Chhau. Although two images are labelled as "Villager from Jharkhand", they are not Seraikella Chhau. Hmm.. three points. Could you frame the first two points into prose (including changes) supported by sources that may be presented in the article. No, I'm not suggesting to remove any images. I agree we should avoid overloading the article with too many images. What I'm requesting is better balance — Images from 3 styles of equal number. The Chhau Mask section also completely ignores Seraikella masks. And its not 3, its 4 as you have accepted about Features of Chhau more of Purulia.

In features of Chhau its written like ""precursors of Chhau dance (especially Purulia style) were not only Paika and Natua"". Paika actually origin of Chhau dance thats widely accpted. Paika means soldier/warrior So in Emitology section i want Chhau derived from the word Chhauni (Barrack) should come 1st than other point of views.
