Fylindfotberserk, That's fine with me; I am not in support of including any other community name(s) either. I always vide Herbert Hope Risley, or Jogendra Nath Bhattacharya before including any name(s) from Basu or Bhowmik to avoid including post-independence adoptions by other communities. Barendra clan Brahmin surnames like Bagchi and Ghoshal have been adopted by some Namasudras- It's in my personal knowledge and also Basu has mentioned it. Basu has also discussed about origins of these surnames, and I believe that part can be included though. These books are resourceful, sadly no English version exists as far as I know. Thanks. @CharlesWain: I agree with the "adoptions by other communities" thing. It happened throughout South Asia during and after the British period, but the point is, we cannot use WP:RAJ. Fylindfotberserk, Bhattacharya's 1896 book has been used as a reference in a number of surname articles including Ghoshal where we both did small edits recently. I chose not to remove it or replace it with Basu, however you may remove if you want to. CharlesWain (talk) 13:51, 25 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
What makes the Basu book reliable? Is the author an authority on the history of the communities in question?
There are several other books other than the Jogendranath Bhattacharya book that can be used to cite information on Ghoshal and Bagchi articles.
Like the 1976 Marriage and Rank in Bengali Culture(UC Berkeley Press), Robert Inden, mentioning Ghoshal as one of the Rarhi Kulin Brahmin.
There is also Vanger Jatiya Itihas by N N Basu (1911), even though this is old, it does not violate WP:RAJ as it is not written by a typical British ethnographer. I would like if the people here actually read WP: RAJ and see what it is about actually.
In the Ghoshal page, CharlesWain has posted a source by Bhaumik which goes so far as to say that Chatterjee and Banerjee are also used by non Brahmin communities. In the Ghoshal talk page I have clearly dropped links (Internet Archive) which have these glaring errors.
