Clarification of target needed

@Obi2canibe, which part of the article do you think supports putting "targeting Muslims", in Wiki's voice, as part of the summary in the lead? -- DeFacto (talk). 18:19, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

Comments: The 36-year-old white Scottish man has not yet been convicted in a court of law and so I think the article shouldn't state "targeting Muslims" in Wiki voice before the man has been found guilty in court. Clearly any alleged attacks are dreadful and unacceptable, but Wikipedia should be cautious in my view before jumping the gun when the case has not yet been heard in court. Keir Starmer said: "The suspect appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred." Starmer did not state unequivocally that the suspect was motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.

Also in my view the following sentence in the article is undue weight at this stage: "The far-right Reform UK party has a clear lead in national opinion polls." As far as I'm aware, mainstream reliable British media sources such as BBC News have not linked the Edinburgh attacks with Reform UK's lead in national opinion polls. Reform UK condemns violent attacks and the party's spokesperson for home affairs, Zia Yusuf, is a British Muslim. I'm going to be WP:BOLD and will tonight be removing the sentence "The far-right Reform UK party has a clear lead in national opinion polls" as per the reasons given in my comments earlier. I feel the sentence is undue weight at this stage. DeFacto has agreed in his comment above that it should be removed, so two editors, including myself, support the removal of the sentence. Guidelines at WP:ONUS states: "The responsibility for achieving consensus for inclusion is on editors seeking to include disputed content." Kind Tennis Fan (talk) 22:52, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

@Obi2canibe, per WP:LEAD, the lead should: "identify the topic and summarize the body of the article with appropriate weight". So I'm not talking about sources, I'm asking specifically which phrase or sentence in the article body (which will, of course be supported by a specific source) you are summarising as "targeting Muslims" for the lead? -- DeFacto (talk). 12:52, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

recent edit warring

The accused has NOT been convicted of any crime. Reform UK is NOT involved in the attack by any means. There is NO connection between the two. There is also NO proof, which can only be deduced by official reports after a conviction, that this was an Anti-Muslim attack.

The Kingsbury High School stabbing (which happened earlier this year)'s accused is a Muslim who shouted "Allahu Akbar" before stabbing his victims as per media reporting of eye-witnesses, but it is NOT mentioned in the lead as per Wiki rules, since the accused in that case hasn't been convicted either.

There is no policy which says just because the accused hasn't been convicted we suppress all content as you are trying to do. Kingsbury High School stabbing and 2026 Golders Green attack contain content you are trying to remove from this article, such as the race/nationality of the suspect.

The article isn't trying to say the attack is connected to Reform, it is giving the background context in relation to the attacks, just as 2026 Golders Green attack gives background information. The source given in the article covers the attack and mentions Reform as background information.

Numerous sources have been given which state the attacks appeared to target Muslims.

Yes, Kingsbury High School stabbing doesn't say attacker said Allahu Akbar in the lede, but this article doesn't say the attacker said ""protecting the country from these fucking Muslim bastards" in the lede either. 2026 Golders Green attack gives the attacker's race/nationality in the lede, so why shouldn't this article?
