Superfast II is a cruise ferry built by Nuovi Cantieri Apuani in Italy. Originally ordered by Grimaldi Holding, she was acquired by Attica Group and delivered on October 2, 2009. She has spent her entire career operating the international Patras–Igoumenitsa–Bari route.
Service
[edit]Ordered by Grimaldi Lines at Nuovi Cantieri Apuania in Marina di Carrara, it was however purchased on 5 June 2008 by Superfast Ferries,[1] to which it was delivered on 2 October 2009 with the name Superfast II .[2] On 4 October it arrived in Patras and two days later it entered service on the connections between Patras, Igoumenitsa and Bari, where it still operates today in tandem with its sister ship Superfast I.[3]
In 2023, the ship underwent a minor conversion in Perama, during which she was equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber).[4] In 2026, she expanded her operational footprint on the Adriatic, beginning service on the Patras–Kefalonia (Sami)–Igoumenitsa–Corfu–Bari line.[5]
Accidents and Incidents
[edit]2015 cargo shift incident
[edit]On January 31, 2015, the Igoumenitsa Port Authority was notified by the Master of Superfast II that during its voyage from Patras to Igoumenitsa (en route to Bari, Italy), severe weather conditions caused cargo to shift. [6]The heavy rolling led to material damage on several trucks, while one truck and a semi-trailer completely overturned inside the main garage deck.[7]
The vessel was carrying 28 passengers, 35 trucks, 3 passenger cars, and one minibus at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no injuries or marine pollution were reported. The 313 passengers and 128 vehicles waiting to board at the port of Igoumenitsa were notified of the delay, and the Central Port Authority of Igoumenitsa detained the ship until cargo could be restowed and a certificate of seaworthiness and class maintenance was issued by its classification society.[8]
2018 pier collision
[edit]On the afternoon of December 15, 2018, Superfast II scraped its starboard (right) side against the pier of the new port of Patras during its departure. [9]The ferry was operating its scheduled route from Patras to Igoumenitsa and Bari, Italy, carrying 126 passengers, 56 crew members, 8 passenger cars, and 41 trucks.[10]
Following the impact, the ship safely returned to its berth. While the Central Port Authority of Patras initially detained Superfast II, she was cleared to resume her voyage shortly after its classification society completed inspections and issued seaworthiness and class maintenance certificates. No injuries or marine pollution were reported in connection with the incident.[11]
