Pouylebon (French pronunciation: [pwilbɔ̃]; Gascon: Poilobon) is a commune in the Gers department in southwestern France.

History

[edit]

Pouylebon originated as a fortified settlement during the Middle Ages. A castle was constructed in the 13th century, and the village was enclosed by defensive walls with two gateways providing access to its main street. The original castle was later demolished, and its materials were reused in the construction of the present château and the parish church. One of the original 13th-century gateways survives and was designated a historic monument in 1940.[3] During the Middle Ages, Pouylebon was located on the Via Tolosana, one of the pilgrimage routes leading to Santiago de Compostela.[4]
