Mairead Clare Fulton (born 17 July 1994), also known as Maddie Fulton, is a Scottish footballer who plays as a midfielder for Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Women's Premier League (SWPL).[1][2][3] She previously played for Celtic, Keflavík in Iceland and Glasgow City. Fulton won two SWPL titles with Glasgow City and was named SWPL Player of the Month for February 2023.[4][5]

Club career

[edit]

Celtic and Keflavík

[edit]

Fulton began her senior career with Celtic.[6] She was named Celtic Women's Player of the Year in 2016.[7]

After spending part of 2017 with Keflavík in Iceland, Fulton joined the club from Celtic in February 2018.[8] In 2018, Fótbolti.net included her among the substitutes in its 1. deild kvenna team of the season and listed her among the players who received votes for player of the year.[9]

Glasgow City

[edit]

Fulton joined Glasgow City in December 2019.[10] She played in City's only match of the subsequently null-and-void 2020 SWPL season. In 2020–21 she made 20 appearances, including all four of the club's UEFA Women's Champions League matches, and scored five league goals.[11] Glasgow City won the SWPL title that season.[4]

Fulton provided five assists across three league matches in February 2023, four of them in an 8–1 win over Partick Thistle, and was named SWPL Player of the Month.[5] She made 33 appearances during the 2022–23 season, scoring three goals and providing 12 assists as Glasgow City won the league, and was selected for the PFA Scotland SWPL Team of the Year.[10]

She left Glasgow City when her contract expired at the end of the 2024–25 season. Fulton had made 150 appearances and scored 14 goals for the club in all competitions, winning the SWPL in 2020–21 and 2022–23. She made 19 league appearances in her final season, when City finished as runners-up and reached the Scottish Women's Cup final.[4]

Heart of Midlothian

[edit]

On 8 July 2025, Fulton signed for Heart of Midlothian on a two-year contract with an option for a further year.[6] After a lengthy period out through injury, she made her first start for Hearts in a 3–2 league win over Rangers on 15 March 2026.[12] Hearts won the 2025–26 SWPL title on the final day of the season.[13]

Fulton remained under contract with Hearts for the 2026–27 season.[14] In August 2026, she started against HB Køge in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.[15]

International career

[edit]

Fulton represented Scotland at under-15, under-17 and under-19 level. She made one appearance for the under-15 team, 16 for the under-17s and six for the under-19s, scoring once at under-19 level.[2] In 2010, she captained the Scotland under-17 team during qualification for the 2011 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship, when Scotland won all three matches in their first qualifying group.[16]
