Carly Johns (born 1 November 2002) is an English footballer who plays as a forward for Scottish Women's Premier League club Heart of Midlothian.[1] She began her senior career with Oxford United and later played for Watford and Durham before moving to Scotland in 2025.

With Oxford, Johns was joint top scorer in the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division in 2022–23, scoring 15 league goals.[2] She scored 18 times in the league for Hearts in 2025–26 as the club won its first SWPL title, and was named in the SWPL Team of the Season.[3]

Club career

[edit]

Oxford United

[edit]

Johns came through Oxford United's Regional Talent Club and moved into the senior team. Her first full senior season was 2019–20. She scored a hat-trick in an 11–1 win over North Leigh, becoming the youngest player at the time to do so for Oxford United Women, and was named the club's Young Player of the Year.[4]

She won two further club awards in 2020–21, being voted Players' Player of the Year and receiving Goal of the Year for a bicycle kick against AFC Wimbledon.[5]

Johns passed 50 goals for Oxford in March 2023. Two goals in a 4–1 win over MK Dons took her record to 51 goals in 70 appearances.[6] She scored 15 league goals during the 2022–23 Southern Premier Division season and shared the division's Golden Boot.[2] By the time she left Oxford, she had scored 52 goals in 76 appearances in all competitions.[7]

Watford

[edit]

Johns joined newly promoted Women's Championship club Watford in August 2023.[7] She made 22 league appearances during the 2023–24 season and scored eight goals.[8] Her eight league goals placed her among the Championship's leading scorers that season.[9]

Durham

[edit]

On 10 July 2024, Johns signed a professional contract with Durham ahead of the 2024–25 Women's Championship season.[9] She made 23 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals during her season at the club.[10] Durham announced in June 2025 that Johns would leave when her contract expired on 30 June.[10]

Heart of Midlothian

[edit]

Johns signed for Heart of Midlothian on 9 July 2025 on a contract running until 2027.[11]

She scored a hat-trick away to Partick Thistle on 18 March 2026 as Hearts won 4–1 and moved closer to league leaders Glasgow City.[12] Her 18th league goal of the season came in a 2–1 win away to Rangers on 24 April.[13]

Hearts went on to win the SWPL championship for the first time, finishing two points ahead of Rangers.[14] Johns appeared in 27 league matches during the season, starting 26, and finished with 18 goals and seven assists. She was joint third in the division for both goals and assists and was included in the SWPL's 2025–26 Team of the Season.[3]

On 5 August 2026, Johns started Hearts' first European match, a 2–1 win over Lithuanian champions FC Gintra in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.[15]
