The Extremadura Championship (Spanish: Campeonato Regional de Extremadura) was an official association football competition in Spain organized by the Extremaduran Football Federation (Federación Extremeña de Fútbol). Founded on September 24, 1924, it served as the top-tier regional league for clubs located within the autonomous community of Extremadura. The tournament also functioned as the regional qualifying phase for the prestigious Copa del Rey.

Between 1932 and 1935, the competition expanded at the request of the Royal Spanish Football Federation to integrate clubs from the neighboring province of Huelva, temporarily becoming known as the Western Regional Championship (Spanish: Campeonato Regional Oeste). The tournament was permanently dissolved in 1940 following structural changes to the Spanish football league system after the Spanish Civil War.

History

The competition officially began in the 1924–25 season, right after the establishment of the regional federation. Despite having a relatively lower competitive level compared to tournaments like the Campeonato Regional Centro or the Campionat de Catalunya, it provided local clubs with their only path to national prominence.

In October 1931, Recreativo de Huelva left the Southern Regional Federation. For the 1932–33 season, Huelva-based teams merged with teams from Badajoz to form the Western Regional Championship. The competition was suspended during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and was shortly abandoned after regional tournaments were replaced by the nationwide Tercera División.^[1]^[2]
