Results from the reviews

[edit]

To succeed in moving from Draft to article we need to be sure to address the issues raised by the reviewers. My concise summary:

  • No AI/LLM based content to be used.
  • Wikipedia:Make technical articles understandable

Three points more were not referred to specific parts of the draft:

  • Summarize secondary sources
  • Use WP:NPOV neutral point of view
  • No original research.

I will take these suggestions as equivalent to writing a good article.

@PianoDan @Helpful Raccoon: these are the comments I read on the Draft and WT:Physics. We will be working against these comments. Johnjbarton (talk) 04:34, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I wouldn't object if you moved the current version of the draft to mainspace, where it can be expanded/improved from there. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 04:52, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I would like to have sufficient sourcing in the Draft to establish notability first. Then we'll take up your offer. Johnjbarton (talk) 04:56, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Identifying key secondary sources

[edit]

@Sayanpdd Please post the top few secondary sources for the proposed article. Johnjbarton (talk) 04:40, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Johnjbarton these are some secondary sources that verify claims of primary research. Sayanpdd (talk) 09:17, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Lu, Y., Wang, X., Deng, X., Feng, C., & Wang, D. (2022). Methods for enhancing the steady-state microbunching in storage rings. Results in Physics, 40, 105849. Gives an overview of SSMB and reviews 4 techniques for compression. Also proposes an new technique, but for that it is a primary source.
  • Kruschinski, A., Deng, X., Feikes, J., Hoehl, A., Klein, R., Li, J., ... & Chao, A. (2024). Confirming the theoretical foundation of steady-state microbunching. Communications Physics, 7(1), 160. Intro gives an overview and the article as whole is a refinement of previous work.
  • Tang, C., Deng, X., Chao, A., Huang, W., Rui, T., Feikes, J., ... & Ratner, D. (2018). An overview of the progress on SSMB. Proc. FLS’18, 166-170. Conference proceedings, which we don't consider reliable for discoveries but here the team is presenting an overview of their work. Suitable for background and explanatory content.
The biggest overall issue here is that all of these sources are from the same team. This makes it more difficult to establish "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Johnjbarton (talk) 16:00, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Johnjbarton https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.2579
Published on Reviews of Modern Physics in APS.
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.1103/RevModPhys.86.897
Hemsing, E., Stupakov, G., Xiang, D. & Zholents, A. (2014). "Beam by design: Laser manipulation of electrons in modern accelerators." Reviews of Modern Physics, 86, 897-942
I have searched for independent secondary sources specifically discussing SSMB. The available SSMB-specific review literature appears to be largely authored by researchers directly involved in developing the SSMB concept and experiments. But mentioned above is the only one 'I think' will qualify as as secondary source. Sayanpdd (talk) 19:23, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Excellent because Reviews of Modern Physics is a top review publisher and the Hemsing source mentions D. F. Ratner and A. W. Chao PRL which initially proposed SSMB. Hemsing also puts the SSMB concept in the broader context of the field.
Here is another source which seems by other authors but prominently mentions
  • Xu, X., Zhang, H., Guo, Z., Li, J., Zhang, J., Zhang, F., ... & He, D. (2025). The coherent high-harmonic radiation with mild energy modulation in storage ring. Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 171124.
These will be sufficient, more will be better and will make writing summaries easier.
My suggestion is to create a few sentence summaries from what the secondary sources say directly about SSMB. For example, from Xu-2025: "SSMB is a proposed scheme to improve the coherence and power of synchrotron radiation from storage rings. The scheme aims to reduce the electron beam bunch length from centimeters to micrometers." The source also mentions the case against SSMB, but we should recognize that this source is a competing proposal. Johnjbarton (talk) 23:54, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sayanpdd, there is no need to ping me by name, I am watching this page. Johnjbarton (talk) 23:55, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposed level for the article.

[edit]

WP:ONEDOWN suggests targeting an article one level below the natural level of the sources. It is clear from the character of this topic that the work is done at the postgraduate level. Thus we should target a senior physics undergraduate student who has a broad but not deep knowledge of physics and no expertise in the subject or related background topics.

Does sound reasonable? Johnjbarton (talk) 04:45, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
