The Gallini Cup is an international youth football tournament held in the province of Pordenone, Italy, during the Easter period. Each year, 128 clubs from around the world are selected to participate, making it one of the largest youth football tournaments in Italy[1]. It is officially recognized by FIFA[2], the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), and UEFA.
History
[edit]Founding
[edit]The tournament is dedicated to Franco Gallini[3], a prominent sports administrator from Pordenone and founder of the Via di Natale Association, who died on the night before the final of the 2002 edition[4]. The tournament was established in 1999 and was initially known as the Frigora Trophy[5] before later being renamed the Gallini Memorial.
Originally established as a four-team tournament, the Gallini Cup has grown into one of the largest youth football tournaments in Italy, with more than 100 teams participating in each edition.
The Gallini Cup serves as a meeting point between local sports clubs and top-level teams from around the world. It has even been described by the Brazilian press as a true youth world championship.[6]
Scouting
[edit]The event has repeatedly served as a reference point for the European transfer market, allowing clubs from top leagues to meet at a prestigious international youth tournament. Sir Alex Ferguson called forward Alberto Massacci after scout David Williams saw the striker playing for Empoli at the Gallini Cup; the deal to Manchester United was completed on 1 July 2009, less than three months after the tournament ended[7].
The transfer of Laurențiu Brănescu to Juventus also took place shortly after the meeting between the Italian club and the player at the Pordenone tournament. The Romanian goalkeeper participated in the Gallini Cup in 2009 with the Romania national football team, in an edition in which Juventus lost the final to Partizan Belgrade, featuring Lazar Marković and Aleksandar Mitrović.[8] Among the spectators at the tournament were also scouts from Manchester City.[9].
For these reasons, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar featured 15 players who had participated in the Gallini Cup,[10] surpassing the record of the World Cup in Russia, which had 12.
Among the 16 players who had participated in the Gallini Cup were the European champions from Italy,[11] while the 2022–23 Serie A season featured as many as 29 players who had previously traveled to Pordenone to participate in the tournament.
Many players who went on to become stars of world football shortly after participated in the Gallini Cup, includingDušan Vlahović[12], Dejan Kulusevski[13][14], Mateo Kovačić, Alex Meret, Roberto Gagliardini[15], Daniele Rugani and Nikola Milenković.
Format
[edit]The Gallini Cup is open to boys and girls aged 12 to 17, competing in the Esordienti, Giovanissimi, and Allievi categories. The Pulcini and Primi Calci categories are not included. Each category consists of 32 teams, divided into 8 groups of 4 teams each. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage. A distinctive feature of the Gallini Cup is the composition of the qualification groups, which always include at least one professional club and two international clubs.[ [16] [17]:
- 1 top team (from the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Serie A, Premier League, or Serie B);
- 1 selected international academy (from Brazil, Russia, the USA, China, England, etc.);
- 1 selected Italian or international academy (football academies affiliated with Serie A clubs, etc.);
- 1 local team from the Province of Pordenone hosting a group at home.
