E. Valsaraj (born 4 April 1954) is an Indian politician from Mahe, Puducherry, and a member of the Indian National Congress. He represented the Mahe Assembly constituency in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly for multiple consecutive terms between 1990 and 2016 [1]. He served in the Government of Puducherry as a Cabinet Minister, handling portfolios including Home, Health, Law, Labour, Industries, Vigilance, Sainik Welfare, Statistics, and Harbour. He is recognized as the first Cabinet Minister from Mahe and among the longest-serving legislators representing the Mahe constituency.
Early life and education
[edit]E. Valsaraj was born on 3 April 1954 in Mahe, Puducherry, to Elambali Karunakaran and Paikkad Sreemathi.
He studied at Laboordonnais College School, Jawaharlal Nehru Higher Secondary School, Government Brennan College, Thalassery, and the Kerala School of Arts.
Political career
[edit]Valsaraj began his political career through the Indian Youth Congress. He served as Mahe Youth Congress Block Secretary and later as Block President. He subsequently became Vice President of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee and served as a Member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
He was first elected to the Puducherry Legislative Assembly from the Mahe constituency in 1990. He was re-elected in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011, representing the constituency for over two decades.
From 1991 to 1996, he served as the Chief Whip of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly .
Between 2000 and 2011, he served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Puducherry. During his ministerial career, he handled portfolios including Health, Law, Labour, Statistics, Home, Vigilance, Sainik Welfare, Industries, and Harbour.
He also served on the Estimates Committee and the Public Accounts Committee of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly and was associated with the Slum Clearance Board.
Public service
[edit]Valsaraj has been associated with the cooperative movement in Mahe and has served as Chairman of several cooperative societies. He has been credited by supporters with contributing to the development of the Mahe region through various infrastructure and public welfare initiatives.
Art and cultural activities
[edit]Apart from politics, Valsaraj is an artist. In 1973, he participated in an international youth festival held in Berlin, representing India. He has conducted painting exhibitions in Puducherry, New Delhi[2], and Mahe.
