Daniel Kondo is a Brazilian author, illustrator and graphic designer whose work spans children's picture books, editorial design and illustrated adaptations of Brazilian popular music. He and writer Silvana Tavano received the 2022 Jabuti Prize in the Children's Literature category for Sonhozzz.[1] Tchibum!, written by Gustavo Borges and illustrated by Kondo, received a Special Mention in the New Horizons category of the 2010 BolognaRagazzi Awards.[2]
Career
[edit]Kondo began his career in advertising. After an internship at the newspaper Gazeta do Povo, he moved to São Paulo and joined the Brazilian advertising agency DPZ, where he worked as an art director before turning to editorial publishing.[3]
He later served for thirteen years as art director of the Brazilian edition of Le Monde diplomatique and was responsible for creating the publication's Brazilian visual identity in 2007.[3]
Kondo has also created illustrated books and visual projects based on Brazilian popular music. His collaboration with Gilberto Gil began in 2022 with the logo for Gil's Nós, a gente tour and later included the illustrated books Nós, a gente and Andar com Fé.[4]
Critical reception
[edit]The municipal library archive of Bologna described Tchibum! as a playful art book influenced by Pop art, highlighting the mobility of its pages and their potential to give the book a film-like quality.[2]
Reviewing Sonhozzz for the Brazilian children's-culture publication Lunetas, Renata Rossi wrote that the dialogue between text and image invited the reader to participate in the narrative. She identified Kondo's geometric forms and the positioning of a pair of eyes at the centre of the pages as visual markers that lead readers to recall their own dreams.[5]
In an article accompanying an interview with Kondo, Jaqueline Silva of the literary magazine Quatro Cinco Um wrote that his adaptation of Gilberto Gil's song “Sítio do Picapau Amarelo” constructed a visual narrative through colours associated with Brazilian culture and folklore. She also noted that its interactive pieces expanded the experience of the work as a book object.[6]
Reviewing Eletricista, written by Augusto Massi and illustrated by Kondo, Rita da Costa Aguiar described materiality as a strong element in Kondo's work. She associated the book's visual language with Russian Constructivism and discussed its use of metallic and neon Pantone inks to contrast tools with electrical energy. Aguiar interpreted the book as addressing family affection, the social invisibility of manual labour and economic inequality.[7]
Recognition
[edit]In 2010, Tchibum! received a Special Mention in the New Horizons category of the BolognaRagazzi Awards.[2]
In 2022, Kondo and Silvana Tavano received the Jabuti Prize for Children's Literature for Sonhozzz.[1]
In the 2025 literary awards of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, Lobo Mau com Dor de Dente placed third in the Aloísio Magalhães Graphic Design category.[8]
In 2026, Refloresta, a collaboration between Kondo and Gilberto Gil, was selected for the annual catalogue and exhibition of the Society of Illustrators in New York.[9]
