Wikipedia:Wiki Workers United solidarity

We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with Wiki Workers United and affirm our willingness to engage in collective action if called upon by WWU, up to and including staging an editorial strike. Editors participating in the collective action would be able to use normal Wikipedia consensus-building methods to establish the action's terms and, if desired, to establish further demands of our own in addition to WWU's demands.

Wiki Workers United, a global solidarity union

This petition began as part of Wikipedia:WMF Community Tech team has been disbanded, engineers laid off, which was split off from the village pump. It began as a direct response to the Wikimedia Foundation laying off the five engineers and a manager on the Community Tech team, most of whom were members of Wiki Workers United, a prospective union at the Foundation; the Foundation had also terminated Brooke Vibber—its most influential MediaWiki developer and a prominent WWU member—a week before. This petition is a statement of solidarity with WWU. Its existence is born of these seven terminations, but at the same time it does not limit itself to that situation. The statement is one of willingness, not an unconditional commitment; no one is bound to participate in an action that goes against their principles, and any signatory may remove their name at any time.

The petition was moved to this page at 16:06, 24 May 2026 (UTC). It is separate from meta:Wiki Workers United § Solidarity, a more general pledge of solidarity that signatories of this petition are also encouraged to sign.

This page's talk page may be used for discussion of how potential collective actions might be implemented. However, note that no collective action has yet been called for by Wiki Workers United, and thus none is actively being planned; should one be called for, all implementation details will be finalized then.

Updates

• 24 June 2026: UK WMF employees (via its Employer of Record Safeguard Global) seek voluntary recognition
• 20 July 2026: US employees are formally seeking voluntary recognition with a deadline of 24 July 2026, with the support of Communications Workers of America union.[1] When questioned in the fireside chat session at Wikimania 2026, WMF CEO Bernadette Meehan said that executives are focusing on Wikimania and will give a response on Monday.
• 27 July 2026: WMF publishes its answer on its blog (archive link), declining voluntary recognition. Prompting discussion on en.wiki and a petition requesting reversal of the decision, where the board upholds the original refusal.
• 1 August 2026: Proof that the Wikimedia Foundation explicitly hired a unionbusting law firm, Littler Mendelson.

We appreciate everyone's support for WWU, regardless of how much or how little experience they have editing Wikipedia. Because the strength of this petition rests on the amount of labor it threatens to deny, we request that people not sign if they have never edited any Wikimedia wikis. We still encourage everyone to sign meta:Wiki Workers United § Solidarity.

1. As proposer. For those wondering exactly how an outright strike would be implemented, I've written up some thoughts at User:Tamzin/What would an editorial strike look like?. 2. As per my comments above. While we'd still need to hear back from WWU about how they would want us to support them, we should be prepared to provide such support on relatively short notice. I would liken this petition to a strike authorization vote during a contract negotiation, which can be done to strengthen their bargaining position even if no actual strike ends up called. I think one of the most urgent things is to create a WWU Telegram group, in which people who have a vested interest in making the foundation look perfect and blameless can't dominate the discussions. I believe this is one of the bigger problems in general engagement about WMF related discussions, that we can solve by creating breathing spaces for fruitful discussion. 49. There should finally be some action taken by editors. WMF has recently made several decision on communitites without properly consulting them. All Wikinews projects were closed, all of the languages, regardless of the opinions of current editors of these projects, who opposed closure. Also several administrators, both former and current, and two former bureaucrats, from Serbian Wikipedia, were banned, with neither the local wiki community nor Wikimedia Serbia having understood the reason for the block. And now this happens. This is an extremely worrying trend. WMF should learn that they can not take unilateral decisions which concern the communities and its members, without taking into account the opinion of the communities and its members. 107. We need to think hard about what would actually be effective. Editing is in itself not a chokepoint and certainly not sustained. On the other hand, users with advanced permissions refusing to clear backlogs and threatening mass-resignation of the Mop or other advanced permissions would show a seriousness with regards to escalation path. The Wikimedia Foundation would be wise to avoid a streissand effect, because we want the health of the project to succeed, but it cannot do so, when employees are afraid of retaliation. 1094. As a card-carrying capitalist, I have found, and not just recently, that employees' unions are of benefit not just to the employees but to the whole enterprise. Even though listing a few of the benefits is, or should be, a trivial exercise, here's a snippet of robustly proven facts: 1. Human beings tend to act & react positively in a positive environment. 2. A working environment that offers, at the very least, the necessary modicum of work safety is a positive environment. And 3. Employees and working people in general produce better results in their work and the better results are always visible to the consumer, even if the cause for the better quality is not evident. Bonus point: Managerial personnel, right up to the CEO, indirectly benefit from a positive working environment, and not just in, for example, their monetary compensation.
