Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If process guidelines are met, move templates to the appropriate subsection here to prepare to delete. Before deleting a template, ensure that it is not in use on any pages (other than talk pages where eliminating the link would change the meaning of a prior discussion), by checking Special:Whatlinkshere for "(transclusion)". Consider placing {{Being deleted}} on the template page.

Please list the actual template (or for batch nominations, all the individual templates) to be processed below, not merely a link to the discussion. This helps volunteers working on this page notice overlapping work. Do not remove or add new section headings as that will break XFDcloser.

Tools

[edit]

There are several tools that can help when implementing TfDs. Some of these are listed below.

Closing discussions

[edit]

The closing procedures are outlined at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Closing instructions.

To review

[edit]

Templates for which each transclusion requires individual attention and analysis before the template is deleted.

  • I'll try and work on the {{cite web}} substitution for these American Factfinder templates in the near future so they can be processed, but if someone has a more efficient way of substituting these please let me know (it might take me a bit since I'm likely going to be busy for a bit). Thanks, Staraction (talk · contribs) 20:46, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
@Voorts: can you clarify you intention/decision with this close? Should transclusions simply be removed? Should they be converted to some new format? Would love to help clear this backlog but not really clear how to resolve these ones... Should they simply be converted to {{cite web}} with |url-status=dead? Any guidance would be appreciated! Converted to cite web per the nom. voorts (talk/contributions) 22:50, 3 May 2026 (UTC)reply

  • Before anyone tries to merge these, PLEASE do in the same way as has been done at {{Afd notice}}! The names of the parameters should be identical to help the maintainers of scripts like WP:TW and for consistency across XfD. See {{Afd notice/testcases}} for how the new arrangement should work. The {{Tfm notice}} and {{Tfr notice}} should remain as wrappers of {{Tfd notice}} in the same way that {{Merge notice}} is a wrapper for {{Afd notice}}, please see the code of {{Merge notice}} to see how it works. The wording of the header and the icon should change based on the nomination.
It is probably a good Idea to use a modified version of {{Article for deletion/switch}}, which could be called {{XfD/switch}} or something: default should be "for discussion" to keep existing behaviour, not "for deletion", but you should simply add support for deletion and the rest of the talk page notice templates should be based on the AfD ones, except for the visible prose text, of course.
The same applies to {{Template for merging}} and {{Template for discussion}}: the former should become a wrapper of the latter. Again, see {{Article for deletion/dated/testcases}} for how it should work!! (this one is slightly different, but the point is that the parameter names should be the same. This is a knee-jerk reaction, but you cannot mandate how a merge is going to take place. Primefac (talk) 14:22, 8 August 2026 (UTC)reply
"Please" doesn't mandate anything. I'm just suggesting the best way to handle this, especially given that one editor in the TfD specifically !voted for my suggested implementation.
Of course you can avoid following these suggestions, but it would make the XfD notice templates needlessly inconsistent amongst themselves and possibly make it a little more difficult to update scripts such as WP:TW in the future. FaviFake (talk) 15:28, 8 August 2026 (UTC)reply

To convert

[edit]

Templates for which the consensus is that they ought to be converted to some other format are put here until the conversion is completed.

Uses are very limited. I do not think its a great idea. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 19:10, 28 December 2025 (UTC)reply

Templates for which the consensus is that all instances should be substituted (e.g. the template should be merged with the article or is a wrapper for a preferred template) are put here until the substitutions are completed. After this is done, the template is deleted from template space.

To orphan

[edit]

These templates are to be deleted, but may still be in use on some pages. Transclusions should be removed from pages so that the templates can be deleted. Note that simple references to them from Talk: pages should not be removed.

Ready for deletion

[edit]

Templates for which consensus to delete has been reached, and for which orphaning has been completed, can be listed here for an administrator to delete. Remove from this list when an item has been deleted.
