Re-thinking this title

[edit]

"Autonomy for Western Sahara" sounds like it addresses a whole range of autonomy considerations, when really this page is about the recently submitted Moroccan proposal for Autonomy. The title should reflect this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.17.68.6 (talkcontribs).

I moved this page to Moroccan Initiative for the Western Sahara. It seems like the most "official" name, especially given this link. Certainly, that site might not be 100-percent neutral, but the name sounds good, right? Rebelguys2 talk 00:15, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

As you are talking about autonomy. I wonder why Backer Plan is on the page. The Autonomy initiative is quite different from the Backer Plan I & II.--Moroccansahraoui (talk) 11:40, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Spain, France and Ukraine

[edit]

@M.Bitton: Sanchez does not claim he fully support the plan. Same for France. Also, for Ukraine, it is according to pro-Morrocco regime. Panam2014 (talk) 14:40, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Panam2014: For Sanchez: his unilateral decision was rejected by the congress. Later on, he stated in his UN speech that "Spain supports a mutually acceptable political solution."
France went from describing the plan as "a serious, credible basis.." to "the only basis .." (a change in position that has been interpreted to mean a support for the plan).
Ukraine: setting aside the BS title of the unreliable source, Ukraine describes the plan as a "serious basis .." (which is totally different from supporting the proposal). M.Bitton (talk) 00:36, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would like to add to this discussion this source :
https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/un-envoy-proposes-western-sahara-partition-plan-2024-10-17/
That says 'In July, France became the second permanent Security Council member after the U.S. to back Morocco's sovereignty over the territory.' Sayuuuto (talk) 15:11, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@M.Bitton, Sayuuuto, and Tidjani Saleh: yes, France have recognized yesterday Western Sahara as Morrocan territory, but not in July 2024. And the map updated. Panam2014 (talk) 14:25, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will repeat here what I said in another discussion:
France supports the autonomy proposal:

As announced by @EmmanuelMacron, Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara forms the only basis for reaching a just and lasting political solution negotiated in line with @UN Security Council resolutions.

The rest is just what a repeat of what the actual autonomy proposal states (Morocco proposes broad autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty). At no point did Macron expressly recognize the "Moroccanness" of the Sahara (there are plenty of French sources stating "Sans reconnaître expressément la "marocanité" du Sahara").
Besides, since Morocco is regarded by the UN as an occupier that has no sovereignty over the territory that is awaiting decolonization, a state cannot recognize such illegal sovereignty "in line with @UN Security Council resolutions" (which Macron repeated during his speech by saying: "le plan d'autonomie de 2007 constitue la seule base pour parvenir à une solution politique juste, durable et négociée, conformément aux résolutions du Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies"). The only way to do it would have to be the illegal way, like Trump did. M.Bitton (talk) 15:35, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a source for "Sans reconnaître expressément la "marocanité" dated October 2024? Panam2014 (talk) 20:54, 30 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Opposition

[edit]

I think opposition & criticism should be added Braganza (talk) 16:11, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

That is a reasonable proposition as Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopaedia built on reliable sources. I have edited the section from “international support” to “international reaction” with a “support” subsection. An “opposition” subsection could be added if reliable sources support it. The trouble with "support" (with no context whatsoever) is that it tends to over simply what the countries are actually supporting. Take the UK's official position for instance: reducing that to "the most credible, viable and pragmatic" ignores the important nuances and conditions. That's why I suggested replacing that table with prose (with each entry giving context to what was said). M.Bitton (talk) 17:06, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
There was a meeting between Meloni & the Algerian president, apparently the president said that they agreed on self-determination but French & pro-Moroccan media insists on some "scandal"
i can't find larger Italian sources on it, only some minor websites who are clearly biased towards Morocco and appear copy & paste Braganza (talk) 19:16, 26 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how that's relevant to this article. Besides, supporting the UN-led process means supporting the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara. M.Bitton (talk) 00:10, 27 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
