My colleagues researched the name Vickery for me as a leaving present when I was promoted and moved to Asia. They presented me with documents tracing the name back to Normans who had participated in the invasion of England, settling in Devon spreading out from there. My mom's side of the family was quite proud of their ancestors and dismissive of the Vickery heritage. Does anyone trace their name back to the Battle of Hastings? While there seems to be no question that the name does appear in records, including deeds, in the years after, it would seem that the name also arose from those who had been vicars or descendants or even orphaned children raised in the church. I am not much concerned, although I do find it ironically delightful to think that all of these DoRs, governors, landowners and successful business owners who were so proud of their heritage could have been but bit players in history when compared to those descended from the only successful occupiers of England who had created the foundations of English society ever sense.

Would love to hear what anyone else has learned.
