Change “Some have argued that this reference referred specifically to the Olukumi communities on the right bank of the lower Niger river, but it is more likely a reference to the Itsekiri, a Yoruba-speaking people whose homeland straddles the Formoso (Benin River) on both banks.”.

to “Lovejoy and Ojo (2015) connect the term ‘Lucumí’ with Olukumi communities in the Benin kingdom and discuss a possible connection between Dourado’s ‘R. de Iacomi’ and the modern Olukumi villages.”.

The present claim that it was “more likely” a reference to the Itsekiri is unsourced. The cited specialist source, Lovejoy and Ojo (2015), instead argues that “Lucumí” was in use in the Benin kingdom in connection with Olukumi communities; it does not identify the R. de Iacomi as more likely referring to the Itsekiri. The additional description of the Itsekiri as “a Yoruba-speaking people” is likewise unsupported here and is inconsistent with specialist linguistic literature, which treats Itsekiri as its own language: Akinkugbe (1976) explicitly identifies Yoruba, Isekiri and Igala as separate languages within the Yoruboid group. Ayenbi (2024), in a doctoral study devoted specifically to Itsekiri, treats it as the Itsekiri language, and not a Yoruba dialect.
