Updates for introduction and infobox

[edit]

Hello, Are any editors willing to help improve the introduction and infobox? The infobox is outdated and inaccurate in places. For example: Tides does not only operate using donor advised funds, it does not have an endowment and it has a new mission statement. To show editors what I have in mind, I prepared the following infobox that could be incorporated:

I also prepared a draft of an introduction that better describes Tides and how it operates. The current introduction paragraph describes Tides as a donor advised fund. While that is one of Tides' services, it does not encompass all Tides does.

Please note that I have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, as I work for Tides. Rather than direct edit, I will post my suggestions here. Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 23:08, 28 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Woebegone: Looking forward to your feedback. If you have questions, I'm happy to answer them here. Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 22:11, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Woebegone: Thanks for your recent edits to update this article. If you have questions regarding my other proposed edits in this edit request, let me know! Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 18:45, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Woebegone: Thanks for your edits to the introduction. Can we clarify that Tides distributes money through donor-advised funds? That is an important distinction to be made in order to accurately describe how Tides provides money to other organizations.
Also, please let me know if you have any questions on updating the infobox. The current infobox contains several bits of outdated information (including the organization's mission statement and financial information) and misleading details (it does not only offer donor-advised funds).
Thank you, RD at Tides (talk) 20:40, 12 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Connor Behan: Thanks for your edits to the infobox. This is looking better already. There are still a few things that need attention. Would you mind reviewing?

Infobox

  • We can delete the Method parameter, as "donor advised fund" is now under Services
  • Mission contains Tides' former mission statement. The current mission statement is: "Tides accelerates the pace of social change, working with innovative partners to solve society's toughest problems"
  • I also prepared text for the Purpose parameter: Equality and human rights, sustainable environment, quality education, healthy individuals and communities

Introduction

Lastly, the introduction needs some clarification. I think it is important to note that Tides distributes money through donor-advised funds. I recommend the first three sentences read as follows: Tides is a public charity and fiscal sponsor whose work focuses on social equality, human rights, the environment, education and health.[1][2][3] It was founded in San Francisco in 1976. Through donor advised funds, Tides distributes money from donors to other organizations, which are often politically liberal.

Thanks for your continued interest with this request. RD at Tides (talk) 17:03, 7 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. The two things I overlooked should now be fixed. However, I have not added the "Purpose" parameter. I don't see it used very often, and when I do, it is not drawn from an organization's own words. Things like this that don't fit in the mission statement should just be explained in the article where there is room to give context. Connor Behan (talk) 17:51, 7 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I will mark this request as partially implemented. Thanks, Connor Behan! jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 02:43, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
This has been open for nine years, so I will close it. The template for "purpose" says "humanitarian, activism, peacekeeping, etc." The Type and Services parameters already make it clear what this organization does, so the additional parameter would not give any more useful information. Hello, Are any editors willing to add Tides' new logo to the infobox? The new logo has been uploaded and can be found here: File:Tides_(organization)_logo.png.

Hi RD at Tides, done. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 18:49, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Gnom! Tides also has a new tagline, "Daring Change," and isn't using "What's Possible" anymore, if you're willing to make that change to the infobox. Thank you! RD at Tides (talk) 19:26, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Also done. --Gnom (talk) 19:34, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Now it's out

[edit]

...That Wikipedia is a huge contributor to this organization, though it is rather concealed. This should probably be mentioned, along with the current (2022) Wikipedia executive that ran it for several years. GenQuest "scribble" 07:08, 22 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

WP isn't a contribute to anything. Wikimedia doesn't 'contribute' to it, but it runs the WMF endowment (as a donor-advised endowment fund, giving money only back to WMF / Wikimedia projects). It's a bit confusing, and should be better explained on the endowment's own pages.  SJ + 02:43, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification. Appreciated. Regards, GenQuest "scribble" 07:02, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Funding by Soros in intro

[edit]

Hi editors I'm Edward and I work for the Tides Foundation. My request is to update the introduction by removing the sentence "Tides has received substantial funding from George Soros."

It isn't accurate to say that the Tides Foundation is "substantially funded" by George Soros. The Politico story does say that, but as contemporary reporting from The Washington Post shows, that statement simply isn't accurate. The WaPo source (published in 2024) says this:

  • It's true that the Tides Foundation has received more than $11 million in (Open Societies Foundations) grants since 2017. It is also true that the Tides Foundation reported $298 million in revenue … in fiscal 2017 alone. The reported grants from OSF total less that (sic) 0.3 percent of Tides' revenue from 2017 to 2022.

The Open Society Foundations is an organization founded by George Soros, but to say that Tides is substantially funded by OSF or Soros is simply untrue. Can editors remove that sentence? Edward at Tides (talk) 19:45, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Done. Viriditas (talk) 19:48, 30 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Edward, the last paragraph in DONATIONS is extremely biased and wrong especially, the part that singles out Palestinians in the Tides Foundation wiki. Though you'd like to know in order to edit it properly. Cheers! Luigi at duck dot com. 188.154.199.16 (talk) 05:56, 5 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

History update

[edit]

Hi editors, I'm Robin and I work for Beutler Ink. I'd like to propose an update to the History section. This update would combine the first two paragraphs of the section, reorder them a bit, and add some additional context and information. It would look something like this:

This does several things:

  • It more closely reflects the information in the source material
  • It cuts out extraneous information about an old edition of a book cited
  • It cleans up citations and makes it more clear where precisely to find the cited material
  • It adds some additional context about the founding of Tides and reorders existing content to follow a more logical flow
  • It clarifies the roles of Lehman and Pike in the administration of the organization

Please let me know what you think! Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 20:20, 5 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@BINK Robin: I've implemented the changes with a few additional changes such as paragraph breaks and altered wording for flow. Let me know if I missed anything or if I messed something up. Viriditas (talk) 20:59, 31 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Your changes look good! Thanks for reviewing and implementing. Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 17:17, 2 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

History update part 2

[edit]

Hi editors, I propose continuing to update the History section of the article in two parts:

First, I propose removing the paragraph about Tides Canada/Makeway. That is a wholly separate organization, and though it shares some similarities with Tides Foundation, its history is not the history of the Tides Foundation. The sourcing used does not say there is any significant connection beyond Tides Foundation providing grants to Tides Canada, and Tides Foundation does not list Makeway/Tides Canada as one of the entities that makes up the broader Tides organization. Ultimately, this paragraph is unrelated to the topic of the article.

Second, I propose adding the following paragraph immediately after the paragraph ending with intent of libertarian and conservative donors :

In 1980, Tides founded People for the American Way with Norman Lear and the National Network of Grantmakers.[1] By the 1990s, Tides was providing more than US$10 million in grants annually.[2] In 2000, Tides launched a program called "Bridging the Economic Divide." It focused on funding living wage campaigns and economic justice coalitions. Tides also launched the Tides Death Penalty Mobilization Fund, which supports the anti-death penalty movement. The Michigan Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence was founded with support from Tides.[3]:57[4]

I moved the Tides Canada/Makeway material to the Pike bio. However, I wonder if it should still be mentioned in terms of expansion and growth beyond the U.S. I also added the new paragraph. Make sure to be mindful of WP:PROSELINE. Viriditas (talk) 21:35, 17 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: thanks for doing that! As far as mentioning it as expansion and growth beyond the US, there isn't an association or affiliation between the organizations, so I don't think it would really be accurate to try to make that connection. They are wholly separate in leadership, decision making, the grants they give, etc. There is already some historical confusion between the groups and I think including something indicating a connection would make that confusion worse. I think moving it to the Pike bio makes the most sense for the sake of clarity. Appreciate the thoughtfulness! BINK Robin (talk) 23:47, 18 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

History update 3

[edit]

Hi editors, continuing efforts to update and expand the History section, for my next request I propose adding the following immediately after the sentence ending founded with support from Tides:

Tides has been the subject of rhetorical attacks by conservative commentators, including Glenn Beck and others on Fox News. In 2010, an assassin attempted to attack the offices of Tides, but was stopped by members of the California Highway Patrol.[1][2] The assassin said they were inspired by what they had seen on Fox News. Following the attack, Pike called for advertisers to pull their sponsorships for programs on the network.[3]

Tides began working with the Wikimedia Foundation in 2016 to manage the Wikimedia Endowment, an income-generating fund supporting Wikimedia Projects. The Endowment raised US$100 million by 2021 and became its own nonprofit entity in 2022.[4] The funds were transitioned out of Tides in 2023.[5] In 2020, Tides conducted a campaign encouraging its donors to move funds from more static donor-advised fund accounts to Tides-led initiatives in one of the organization's grantmaking areas, spurring spending and grantmaking, leading to Tides providing approximately US$200 million in grants to promote civic engagement and combat voter suppression in 2024.[6]

This is primarily an expansion to History and a rewrite of the Wikimedia Foundation section.

As a corollary to this addition, I propose removing the Wikimedia Foundation section, as that section is pretty short to have its own heading and the content fits neatly into History. My change also removes the sentence about Amanda Keton, which does not strike me as particularly relevant and relies on a press release as the source.

Please let me know what you think! BINK Robin (talk) 23:47, 18 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Viriditas Flagging you here in case you're interested in reviewing another set of changes for this article. Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 15:58, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's an extremely controversial set of edits that will take some time to go through and verify. At first glance, the wording needs work. Viriditas (talk) 10:12, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I created a sandbox to work on this. Is this the edit you are requesting, or did I get it wrong? Viriditas (talk) 22:05, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I personally agree that stochastic terrorism has occurred due to the behavior of certain people, but you will need to rely on authoritative attribution to make these connections. Viriditas (talk) 22:07, 24 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: Thanks for reviewing and putting that sandbox together. That looks right to me with regard to the assassination portion of the request. My only suggestions would be to move that content after the sentences By 2009, Tides allocated $75 million per year in donor money, most of which went to fund progressive political causes. In 2011, Tides received about $90 million in funding, and awarded about $96 million to various individuals and organizations. to keep everything chronological and to remove the Wikimedia Foundation section since that content is covered by the addition of the paragraph on the Wikimedia Foundation partnership to the History section.
I have also talked with the folks at Tides again about the assassination paragraph. They do not feel strongly about including it. The request to add it was to try and make the History section as complete as possible, but if you feel it is not appropriate or not adequately sourced, I am fine with dropping that part of the request. Thanks again, BINK Robin (talk) 16:35, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The issue is mainly strengthening the citations and improving the wording. I am revisiting it now. Viriditas (talk) 21:17, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
For me, it would be ideal to link this to stochastic terrorism, but there's a lot of issues getting to that goal. For one, that article is a mess and is currently up for GAN. I would fail it myself if I was so inclined as it's poorly sourced and written. Viriditas (talk) 21:23, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I figured out how to fix your proposed version. I'm putting it together now. Viriditas (talk) 23:16, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@BINK Robin: I made the changes to User:Viriditas/sandbox50#History, but it still isn't chronological, so perhaps I'm misunderstanding you. Viriditas (talk) 21:33, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: thanks for taking the time to do that research. I think if you are happy with the updated sourcing then I am too. It is fascinating to work on Wikipedia articles and look back on what did and didn't get mainstream coverage. As far as the chronology of the content goes, would it be okay with you if I show you what I'm thinking and make the changes in your sandbox? Thank you again for all your time and attention here. Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 16:49, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Please do. Viriditas (talk) 18:58, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: Done! If that looks good to you, would you move it into the article? Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 19:17, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that I keep seeing things that need to be fixed. Can you take a look at the lead per my comments below? The assets number is linked to a lawsuit and that appears to be out of date. Also, we should be working towards having the lead summarize the body, so everything in the lead should already be mentioned elsewhere. There’s also a few dead links I couldn’t verify. Let’s try to improve this and bring it up to speed. Viriditas (talk) 19:33, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: I agree, the lead will need updates. I have some other changes I’d planned to ask for. Would you like me to make all of those in your Sandbox so you can see my overall plan? BINK Robin (talk) 19:59, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure. I’m going offline for a few hours now. Viriditas (talk) 20:07, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good! It'll take me a bit to get to this anyways. I'll drop you a line after I make my changes. Cheers, BINK Robin (talk) 20:10, 10 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Note, the "Reception and image" section gives undue weight to negative reception and ignores the positive. Viriditas (talk) 01:02, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I saw your recent edits. Thanks for taking the initiative on those! I’ll be back soon with some more changes to propose in your Sandbox. BINK Robin (talk) 22:39, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will update the sandbox to sync. The "Reception" section is still unbalanced as it currently lists two negative things and fails to mention anything positive about the org. Viriditas (talk) 22:42, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Good plan. Agreed about Reception, my plan is to propose moving some content our of that section that isn't really reception, and merge it with Donations into an Organization and operations section. BINK Robin (talk) 22:47, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Whatever works. Also, can you update the status of the lawsuit? I'm sure Tides has received awards or recognition for their work; it would help to add that as well. One thing that would help is making a table of all their major campaigns and showing some kind of results related to the campaign. This would also allow us to begin moving material out of the body into the table and to reserve the body text for historical narrative instead of lists of campaigns, etc. Viriditas (talk) 22:58, 11 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I’ll check on the status of the lawsuit and see what I can come up with for a table. Thanks! BINK Robin (talk) 20:27, 12 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Viriditas: I checked in with Tides. They said they cannot comment on the BLMGNF lawsuit at this time but would let us know if they found out anything new.
As far as a table of their initiatives goes, I am still working on that. My contacts at Tides said they don't have a great way to demonstrate that in table form. They said that they tend to group initiatives more by subject area and shared a document with me about assistance to food banks that could be used to create a table something like this:
Tides initiatives
Organization supportedAction areaSupporting
San Antonio Food BankFood security105,000 patrons
Is that what you had in mind? If so, I can see what I can put together through documents they would publish on their website and the existing content in the article, though the supporting field may not always have clear cut figures or responses. Let me know what you think! BINK Robin (talk) 17:56, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Is the proposal that such a table would just be sourced to Tides? I have concerns about WP:PROMO here. Also WP:OR and WP:ABOUTSELF. Marquardtika (talk) 20:04, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
A use of a table here is only for formatting and layout. It frees up the body to write more content. I don't see what this has to do with PROMO or OR, as it would use only well established secondary sources reflecting the primary. Viriditas (talk) 20:28, 20 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sources which categorize the attack as stochastic terrorism

[edit]
  • Philosopher and legal scholar James Angove ("Stochastic terrorism: critical reflections on an emerging concept", 2017: 23)
  • LGBTQ historian Clayton Delery (Out for Queer Blood, 2017: 138-139)
  • Criminologist Mark S. Hamm and sociologist Ramón Spaaij (The Age of Lone Wolf Terrorism, 2017: 85-86)
  • Journalist John Hamilton ("Progressive Hunter", 2010)
Notes
  • All of the above sources depend on information obtained from the suspect's family and from affidavits, some of which appear to have been given to the larger media and scholars by KPFA journalist, news anchor and Democracy Now! producer John Hamilton, who did some of the research himself and interviewed the people involved, creating a paper trail of verifiable primary source documents supporting the claims, which were then used by the larger media and scholars to file their stories and do their research. What bothers me is why was there only one single journalist involved in tracking down the original story? Was the mainstream media too busy reporting on the Kardashians and the new menu items at McDonald's? It seems very odd to me that in 2010, only one journalist was involved in covering this story, and it wasn't a mainstream journalist but an independent one. In other words, why was the attempted attack on Tides ignored by the wider world? FWIW, this general idea of ignoring a developing story by authorities appears to come up a lot, and you see this recurring pattern of smaller, independent investigators bringing attention to an important story only to have it ignored by the larger community. We saw that same thing happen in 9/11 with the FBI and with the Trump fake electors plot which was basically ignored by Biden's DOJ.

[edit]
Tides Foundation is a left-leaning donor advised fund based in the United States that manages over $1.4 billion in assets.

This was a claim made in a lawsuit. ProPublica appears to claim otherwise. Viriditas (talk) 00:57, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Viriditas: Good catch! I think the discrepancy may be from blending together all Tides entities vs. looking at just the Foundation itself. As you point out through ProPublica, the 2023 Form 990 for Tides Foundation says it had total assets at the end of fiscal year 2023 (the most recent year available) of US$646.1 million and net assets of US$577.5 million (lines 20 and 22, page 1 of the 990). BLMGN lawsuit in Reception and image

[edit]

Hi editors, there have been new developments regarding some content in the Reception and image section, specifically this content:

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGN) sued Tides in 2024, alleging mismanagement of donations. In 2020, BLMGN was the recipient of $90 million in donations but did not have tax-exempt status. They used Tides to invest some of the funds and access financial services. The two groups had been partners, with Tides acting as the fiscal sponsor for the foundation while it awaited tax-exempt status. BLMGN ended its partnership with Tides in 2022 and accused Tides of refusing to transfer millions to the group. Tides denied the allegations, saying the money was reserved in the Black Lives Matter Support Fund for smaller chapters like the Black Lives Matter Grassroots organization, which was no longer part of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation.[1][2]

Last week, the lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice and BLM GN retracted its claims. The two parties reached an undisclosed settlement, all per Bloomberg law. All of the relevant info is included above the paywall.

With that in mind, I don't think the above content is appropriate any longer. Given the nature of the dismissal and the retraction, I think there are two things that could be done:

  • Remove this content entirely under WP:NOTEVERYTHING and WP:DUEWEIGHT. Retaining content about retracted claims seems like a significant enough neutrality issue that wholesale removal is warranted
  • Or rewrite the content to include less detail and note the dismissal, something like:
    • The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLM GNF) sued Tides in 2024 for alleged mismanagement of donations and improperly withholding managed funds.[1] BLM GNF voluntarily dismissed its suit against Tides, with prejudice, and retracted all claims and allegations as part of the settlement in 2026.[2]
