Straw HatsStraw Hat Pirates – Official full name of the group, instead of a shortened nickname. BrookTheHumming (talk) 08:18, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oppose, the Creation and conception section shows a reliable source (Volume 57 SBS) of series creator Oda saying the official name of the group is the Straw Hats. --Plumber (talk) 00:14, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Although the author mentions that shortened version of the name, in the SBS he only mentions that he always refers to them that way. They are always referred to in the story, media, and merchandising as "Straw Hat Pirates" or "Straw Hat Crew" (and sometimes also in their Japanese name as "Mugiwara Pirates", like in the cover of chapter 377 of the manga). The official website of the franchise included, with the full name in their page being 麦わらの一味 (Mugiwara no ichimi), traslated as "Straw Hat Crew/Pirates": BrookTheHumming (talk) 01:27, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
麦わらの一味 (Mugiwara no ichimi) translates to Straw Hats. Oftentimes it is translated to Straw Hat Pirates but this is irregular since the original term lacks the Japanese word for pirate, 海賊 (kaizoku). WP:COMMONNAME is clear here. The article notes author Oda wrote:

I've decided to always call them the "Straw Hats." I've never called them anything else." ("One Piece, Vol. 57". Viz Media. p. 152. Archived from the original on August 10, 2011. Retrieved July 25, 2011.)

A statement by an author on their work is far more important than the promotional website of the same franchise. --Plumber (talk) 02:35, 12 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I believe the most appropriate thing would be to use the official name in the English translations of the manga: Straw Hat Crew. This is how the group is officially introduced at the beginning of the manga volumes. BrookTheHumming (talk) 00:13, 13 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Split Jimbei section to own article

[edit]

Currently this article is over 9,000 words meaning it "Probably should be divided or trimmed" according to WP:Article size. The Jimbei section contains enough WP:reliable sources to make an article according to WP:Notability, and would cut this page down to a more manageable size. --Plumber (talk) 05:38, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Plumber Jimbei was AfD'd a while back and found to fail notability, so I'd advise against a split. I'd say the article is likely fine without being split; if size is a concern, effort should be focused on trimming down what is currently here rather than splitting out non-notable content. That discussion was held when there was a Jimbei stub article with just nine reliable sources, and before the creation of articles such as the Straw Hats' Jolly Roger (which survived its own notability concerns) after Gen Z protests started using Straw Hat imagery. A split done now would create a Jimbei article with the second-most reliable sources of any of the Straw Hats' articles after Monkey D. Luffy. --Plumber (talk) 17:27, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Plumber the article looks nearly the same as the merged version? The only significant addition in your newer version is the "Thematic influence on One Piece" section, which largely cites unreliable Wikipedia:THESIS pieces among other questionable sources like Gamescooper, and the bulk of added sources otherwise are Wikipedia:PRIMARY citations to One Piece media. The bits about the Jolly Roger seem more about the symbol and its protest uses than Jimbei, in my opinion.
I have to agree with @Hydronium Hydroxide's assessment that Jimbei just doesn't have enough for his own article quite yet, and in my opinion his frankly massive section should likely be trimmed down to fit the list rather than the other way around (Do we really need a whole sub-section on various in-universe abilities like "Fish-Man Karate" for example?) Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 19:09, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I Support splitting Jimbei off into his own article. The section on him in the article Straw Hats is long enough to be a short article. KarelOrHarken555 (talk) 22:33, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The previous Jimbei article was nominated for deletion when it only had nine reliable sources. A split today would create an article with 73 reliable sources. WP:Notability, WP:Article size, MOS:CONSISTENT and WP:NPOV are clear a main character of the most popular comic series of all time with dozens of reliable sources establishing notability merits a split to create an article. Plumber (talk) 16:08, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Notability, I would argue, has still not been established. Reliability does not equal notability, and when the bulk of the sources are just citing One Piece itself, there's not really grounds for a lot of notable content separation. Jimbei's section should be pared down, not split off. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 04:04, 14 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Jimbei is one of the ten main characters of the best-selling comic series of all time and clearly meets WP:Notability guidelines including WP:GNG. To satisfy WP:NPOV let's compare to some other series on the list. Dragon Ball has 25 articles dedicated to the main characters of that series, Batman has an entire template linking to about 100 character articles while Superman also has an entire template linking to over 230 character articles. All of these series have sold less volumes than One Piece , yet have over ~350 articles dedicated to them compared to One Piece. WP:Notability and WP:NPOV is clear here to support a split creating a Jimbei article. --Plumber (talk) 21:18, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

See Wikipedia:INHERITED, Wikipedia:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, and Wikipedia:ITSIMPORTANT. Other editors have given you this talk already: Articles need to meet individual notability, and just because other content exists in a significant manner does not mean a given article is notable. You need to provide relevant sources for a split, which AfD has already determined are not enough for one. Magneton Considerer: Pokelego999 (Talk) (Contribs) 18:30, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
WP:Notability is clear: article content does not determine notability (WP:ARTN), and notability is based on the existence of suitable sources, not on the state of sourcing in an article. However, since a Jimbei article would have more reliable sources than any other Straw Hat except Luffy, it clearly passes WP:GNG. --Plumber (talk) 18:09, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
