Confederate flag

The following content was moved from the article page; it's really interesting, but IMHO not relevant to the castle's overall history/identity.

After the Battle of Okinawa a Confederate flag was raised over Shuri Castle by an American soldier from the self-styled "Rebel Company" (Company A of the 5th Marine Regiment). It was visible for miles and quickly taken down and replaced with the Stars and Stripes.

Needs more history

• Looks like the Confederate Flag trivia is back. I think we have an edit warrior!
• A more permanent solution might involve solving the root problem: the history of the castle isn't documented here at all. The Confederate flag episode was three days in the history of Shuri Castle... out of several hundred years!

Was there any opposition to this? Strikes me as tacky -- relics should remain relics.

Definite article + foreign proper noun

Hello. Recent edits to this page have reintroduced an inconsistent use of definite articles (i.e. "the") when used with foreign proper nouns. Perhaps one unexplained element of my recent 170 odd edits to this page, was introducing a consistent usage of foreign proper nouns throughout the page. Basically, most style guides (and my teacher training) argue a general non-usage of articles with foreign proper nouns, and this page consciously evolved (in my mind at least) a consistent usage of that (particularly since my edits introduced scores of new foreign proper nouns into the article). Referencing this source (http://oki-park.jp/userfiles/files/pdf/shurijo/lang/history_en.pdf) as a primary guide, it follows this style (although sometimes inconsistently) of not using "the" when citing foreign (untranslated) proper nouns within the castle. An example of usage may be: I visited Zijin Cheng last year vs. I visited the Forbidden City last year. Thanks. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 23:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

It burns

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/videonews/nnn?a=20191031-00000027-nnn-soci　says Shurijo's Main Building (Seiden) is burning. No casuality is reported. Thanks, guys. It was so shocked. I couldn't sleep in. Anyway. The latest NHK news (began from 6AM) reports "Main Hall and North Hall have burned down completely", "Other buildings including South Hall are still burning". Update at 2019/10/31 06:47 (JST) by Kyodo News https://this.kiji.is/562392986570998881, South Hall has almost burned down, too, Naha Fire Department says. The Shurijo complex is still burning so that police and fire department have neighboring people evacuate. --Aphaia (talk) 22:01, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Splitting proposal

I propose that sections Shuri Castle#2019 fire be split into a separate page called 2019 Shuri Castle Fire.

• It seems that the fire is quite notable enough, as the fire ruined the main hall, which is a crucial part of the castle. Therefore, it qualifys to be seperated into another article.
• Also, for other fires of important heritages, seperated articles are created, eg.
  • Notre-Dame de Paris 2019→Notre-Dame de Paris fire
  • And note that even the merge of 2018 Brazilian National Museum fire into National Museum of Brazil is quite contested per Talk:National Museum of Brazil#Merge with fire article

• Oppose. While the loss of Shuri Castle's main structures is sad, I don't think there's enough information to justify splitting the incident into its own article. Keeping in mind also that the area has been affected by disasters several times in the past. JRHorse (talk) 03:18, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
• Oppose. Not noteworthy enough though to be mentioned in the main Wikipedia page's In the news however... Also, the castle is more a local Ryukyuan symbol, and less so a national or international one of Japan (and a replica to boot). Accuracy

The text of the article does not match what I see on GoogleEarth. The most recent images in Google Earth (use the history slider to scroll to a satellite image taken 3-22-2025) shows a massive modern building overlaying the entire central area of the castle - the parts that all burned down recently. If you look at the street view images, most are from before the fire, but you can find some which were also taken in 2025 showing a large 3 or 4 story modern looking gray building occupying the same area as the castle buildings and courtyard. This conflicts with the text which states that the castle is being restored and will be completed in 2026.FatBear1 (talk) 16:51, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
