Ca'Foscari University - History of English Culture Project

[edit]

Hi everyone! I'm a postgraduate student from Ca' Foscari University, Venice. As an assignement for my History of English Culture course I have chosen to expand this article. As a provisional bibliography I have selected these sources: Tim Hitchcock and Robert Shoemaker, Tales from the Hanging Court, London, Hodder Arnold, 2007 www.oldbaileyonline.org If you have any suggestions or advice, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to talk to me here or on my talk page! G.ale.1105 (talk) 10:37, 19 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Execution at Fetter Lane / Fleet street.

[edit]

The page currently says that Malcolm was hanged in early March at Tyburn.

However, from the website of The London Gazette :

'Sarah Malcolm was hanged was hanged on 7 March 1733 on a gallows placed between Mitre Court and Fetter Lane in Fleet Street, London.'

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/awards-and-accreditation/content/100347

The Newgate Calender and the caption of a contemporary illustration seem to support this.

The execution seems to have been carried out here because the Fleet Street gallows was closer to the scene of the murders than Tyburn. '...at a place nigh where her heinous crimes were committed, as was customary.' 82.2.205.111 (talk) 23:37, 8 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
