Nothing about Purnia city in this article

This is a wrong argument. There are separate pages for the district and the town, wherever the names are same. What the content would be depends on different editors. This should never be done. I am removing the merger tag. - Chandan Guha (talk) 07:47, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

2011 population

Trying to sort out the correct population figure to use here...

• 310,870 was shown in a previous version, but the given citation () was wrong (it showed Lahauli Gautam in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, and that number wasn't in there); no idea where 310,870 came from
• 310,817 from for "Purnia UA" (urban agglomeration?)
• 282,248 from page 24, for "Purnia (M Corp)" (municipal corporation?)

Is the UA or M Corp population figure (or both?) appropriate for Purnia's listed population? Dl2000 (talk) 00:47, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

@Dl2000: The Infobox is for UA as "Urban Aggiornament" mentioned in the info box, so UA figure should be used. As for... 870 figure, it was most probably a typo for... 817. Thanks. Jakichandan (talk) 01:07, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Regarding addition of following important point regarding Purnia

'The city of Purnia has continued its tradition of hoisting the national flag at 12.01 am on every Independence Day since 1947.'

5th largest urban agglomorattion of Bihar is Purnea

some miscreants of Darbhanga Bihar page have modified the Purnea page and edited with Purnea is the 7th largest city, which is not true, refer to 2011 Wikipedia, Purnea is 5ht largest Urban Agglomeration. Darbhanga editors from poor community come to Wikipedia page and do nasty stuff. Kindly take action.

Purnea is the 5th largest urban agglomeration of Bihar. The previous editor have cunningly changed it to 5th largest city of Bihar and have mentioned the names of cities which is not required at all. If you click the 7th largest cities of Bihar, You can clearly see Purnea at the 5th place. The previous editor have tried to vandalize this section, please take action. Air

Purnea Airport, also known as Chunapur Airport (Airforce Station), is located within the cantonment area but is restricted to army usage only. Proposals for the airport to operate scheduled flights are being widely discussed at the level of the state government. Recently Spirit Air has tried to start flights from Purnia to Patna. Airport

Purnea Airport (also known as Chunapur Airport) is a domestic airport serving Purnea in the Seemanchal region of Bihar, India. It is operated as a civil enclave within the Indian Air Force base at Chunapur, about 10 km west of the city.

History

The airstrip at Chunapur was originally developed and maintained by the Indian Air Force. Demands for civilian operations had continued for decades, as the Seemanchal and Kosi regions lacked direct air connectivity. In 2025, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) developed a civil enclave with an interim passenger terminal to start scheduled flights.

Commercial operations

Commercial flight operations began on 16 September 2025.

• IndiGo launched a thrice-weekly service connecting Kolkata and Purnea (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).
• Star Air launched services to Ahmedabad. The inaugural flight operated on 15 September, with regular service commencing 29 September 2025 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday).

Facilities

The interim terminal building, built using prefabricated porta cabins, spans around 3,450 m² and is capable of handling 300 passengers per hour. It includes six check-in counters, two arrival and two departure gates, one baggage conveyor belt, and standard X-ray scanning equipment. Plans for a permanent terminal and expanded civil enclave are underway.

Runway

The Chunapur airstrip features one concrete runway shared with the Air Force. Reports cite it as the longest runway in Bihar, with a length of approximately 2,743–3,352 metres.

Significance

Purnea became the fourth civilian airport in Bihar after Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga. The facility is expected to benefit the districts of Purnea, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj, as well as neighbouring areas of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and southern Nepal.

Purnea Airport (IATA: PXN, ICAO: VEPU) in Bihar has recently transitioned from an Indian Air Force base to a commercial airport, serving the Seemanchal and Kosi regions. The civil enclave, developed by the Airports Authority of India, was inaugurated on 15 September 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The interim terminal, built using prefabricated porta cabins, spans 3,000 m² and handles up to 300 passengers at peak hours.

Commercial operations began the same day with IndiGo launching flights to Kolkata and Star Air starting service to Ahmedabad. IndiGo’s Kolkata route operates three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Soon after, on 4 October 2025, IndiGo also launched a daily direct flight to Delhi, with departures from Delhi at 10:45 AM and returns from Purnea at 1:50 PM. Fares start from ₹6,300 (Purnea–Delhi) and ₹5,000 (Delhi–Purnea).

The airport, which currently uses temporary infrastructure, is set for major expansion with permanent terminals and additional routes under planning, including potential future flights to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
