Would pomfret go under the name Mullet in the western world ( ie England & Ireland)
No, mullet is a different fish entirely. From what I've heard, though, pomfret is also sometimes known as pompano. Jcb9

- I believe, based on a cursory examination of several of the fish in the Pomfret and Pompano articles, that there is considerable overlap between these two families of fish. I suspect there are localization effects at play here. In North America, the name Pompano is used for most fish of this general appearance. In Ray Cannon's book How To Fish The Pacific Coast, the name Pomfret is not found, but the California Butterfish (Palometa Simillima) is called the Pompano, with the caveat that it is NOT a "True" Pompano. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:6AE5:2510:0:0:0:24 (talk) 01:59, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
