Source: A few years later, she was extremely busy, traveling between New York and Chicago to perform and attending university in Bloomington, Ind., when she got tendinitis in both arms. She found the toy piano less painful to play than the grand piano, and began to focus on it. “People would say: ‘Well, don’t you find that very limiting? The range is smaller,’” she recalled. “I thought the sound itself was an unexplored sound.”

Source: Chen was a trained pianist, not a composer; she worried she’d be considered a dilettante, so she wrote her first pieces under pseudonyms. Then a friend wanted to play a toy piano work by Elsa Brunswick and asked Chen for Brunswick’s contact information. Brunswick, of course, was Chen herself.

• Pending improvement. Article was nommed just before deadline; (within 7 days of moving to mainspace and last edit). Long enough, no copyvio, no images. No problems with prose or MOS. Major issue is I think current sourcing on article is pretty mediocre for establishing notability; some primary sources, a WP:THESIS, and misc websites. Not a lot of coverage in national-level RS. Some of the articles only contain passing mentions of her. The NYT article is probably the strongest source. The Roanoke Times ones are just ok, covering her as a young woman and not as a professional, and it's just a local paper. But googling and her status as a Guggenheim Fellow seems to suggest she is notable, just article should better reflect that imo. On the hook, it's interesting and reliably sourced.   • @Grapesurgeon: I’ve added more reception, namely some reviews for her work from sources like NYT and WaPo, as well her being noted as a pioneer, which should help. Also, ARG and Chicago Classical Review are reliable and reviews of her work, and reliance on local sourcing isn't an issue unless the subject's an organization; btw the thesis is used as a primary source (and a doctoral one). Sorry I didn't get to this soon enough; I'm a little busy with finals right now and had to submit this at day seven. ミラP@Miraclepine 01:57, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
