Pederasty or paederasty (/ˈpɛdəræsti/) is a practice that involves both an adult man and a young boy engaging in any form of sex acts. It was socially acknowledged as a historical concept and construct of cultural practices that were done in many civilizations and societies during the Classical antiquity between Ancient Greece and Rome within the Greco-Roman world, and elsewhere in the world, such as the Pre-Meiji era of Japan.
In most countries today in many parts of the world. Various laws based on the age of consent in a local or nationwide level gets to determine if the person is considered legally and lawfully competent and capable to have consented to any sex acts to the other person without any harmful contact in order to classify it on whether or not it is constituted as a sex crime involving child sexual abuse or statutory rape. An adult engaging in sexual activity with a minor is considered an act that is deemed a very offensive and abusive thing to do by the authorities and society in general for a wide variety of reasons, including the age of the minor and also the psychologically and physically harmful effects they have endued as well as also gravely affecting their mental health and wellbeing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.202.60.98 (talk) 09:54, 1 Nov 2024 (UTC)

Acknowledgment of different historic definitions in the introduction would be suitable
[edit]I often see people who read nothing more than the beginning of this article confused about this term, thinking this word refers only to love between a person and a child and every historical person who used this word in early academia must've mean this word in no other sense.
The first 2 paragraphs on the current revision of the article:
Pederasty or paederasty /ˈpɛdəræsti/ is a sexual relationship between an adult man and an adolescent boy. It was a socially acknowledged practice in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome and elsewhere in the world, such as Pre-Meiji Japan. Less frequently, it involved an adult woman and an adolescent girl.
In most countries today, the local age of consent determines whether a person is considered legally competent to consent to sexual acts, and whether such contact is child sexual abuse or statutory rape. An adult engaging in sexual activity with a minor is considered abusive by authorities for a variety of reasons, including the age of the minor and the psychological and physical harm they may endure.
Here's how these paragraphs look in Russian Wikipedia, much more informative and neutral.
Pederasty (ancient Greek: παιδεραστία; παῖς, gen.sing. παιδός "child; boy" + ἐραστής "loving", literally "love of boys") - in a cultural and historical context: an institutionalized form of love or sexual relations between an adult man and a teenage boy (or young man), in which, in addition to the sexual aspect, the pedagogical and social aspects also played a certain role.
At the initial stage of the development of sexology, the term "pederasty" denoted male homosexuality in general, but then the use of this term in science was abandoned. In colloquial language, this pejorative is still used to denote male homosexuality.
If you would open any XVII-XIX century work on sexology, "pederasty" would be used in the meaning of general homosexuality, sometimes of gender dysphoria. Carbon-Starlight (talk) 21:48, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
Image should be removed
[edit]Very concerned about the Early Modern Europe section literally has a photo of a fully naked child, with the caption stating that the photographer was known for taking homoerotic pictures of young boys.
All of the artwork up until that point was okay, but this is an actual photo of an actual child, with visible penis. Who knows how many people have saved it to their computer...
This image should be removed, as the one above it is entirely sufficient for this portion of the article. Wikiwolfgirl (talk) 12:47, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- Done, thanks. Crossroads -talk- 22:42, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
relevance of motsoalle
[edit]in
Africa
[edit]there is a section about motsoalle relationships. "Anthropologists Stephen Murray and Will Roscoe reported that women in Lesotho engaged in socially sanctioned "long term, erotic relationships", named motsoalle (lit. 'Special Friend'). Often, a motsoalle relationship was acknowledged publicly with a ritual feast and with the community fully aware of the women's commitment to one another. Motsoalle relationships commonly existed among school girls where it functioned like a type of "puppy love" or mentorship. As Lesotho became more modernized, those communities were exposed to Western culture and thus homophobia. Anthropologist K. Limakatsuo Kendall hypothesizes that as Western ideas spread, the idea that women could be sexual with one another, coupled with homophobia, began to erase the motsoalle relationships. By the 1980s, the ritual feasts that were once celebrated by the community for motsoalles had vanished. Today, motsoalle relationships have largely disappeared." this is really cool (if not quite sad) but i don't see how it's relevant to pederasty. it being mentioned here could even been seen as a homophobic comparison of kids in lesbian relationships to pederasty. which would be. not good. i don't think that is the intent but i also don't see why else it would be mentioned?? - Thank you, now removed. I don't see any connection. Seems to be a case of WP:OR, of which there appear to be others in this article as well. Crossroads -talk- 17:59, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Age of consent map shows wrong data
[edit]The age of consent for male-male sexual acts is incorrect. It shows many countries in europe as having an age of consent of 18, but typically the age of consent is the same as the age of consent for heterosexual relations, which is (unfortunately) not 18 in europe Keksi s mlijekom (talk) 17:14, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
