[edit]I came to this site as a result of searching for the meaning of passepartout on Goggle and I was surprised that "mat" was not mentioned as a synonym when that is clearly the word used by artists and picture framers throughout North America so far as I know. Still, I am not clear about what the correct spelling of mat in this usage should be.
The correct spelling is "matte" as in "matte painting".
