Why is the blurb about US-Nigerian relations present in the article? It doesn't relate at all to the rest of the article. This article isn't about Christian persecutions, the USA, or the Nigeria's relations with the latter. There's nothing in the article to imply that the USA had any kind of relevancy before or after this outside of a context that isn't related to the matters of the article. ~2025-32600-96 (talk) 19:05, 24 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
LMAO... for any future readers: Trump's comments are one of the biggest topics in Nigeria at the moment. It is mentioned in virtually every article relating to the kidnapping from major news outlets. JulDer Wiki (talk) 10:11, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move reviewafter discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. There is consensus to move the article to Papiri kidnapping. Most editors agreed with the nominator that, based on WP:NCWWW and WP:NOYEAR, a year is not needed because there has been no other kidnapping in Papiri, and using the town name matches how similar events in Nigeria are titled. Some editors suggested adding “school” or including the year, but these ideas did not gain enough support. (closed by non-admin page mover) - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆(𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 15:29, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support I doubt one would search for it so specifically, especially with it being so recent and with no other similar "Papiri kidnapping." From a viewer perspective, I'd probably search for "Papiri kidnapping" anyways.
Support per nom. It makes more sense to go with Papiri kidnapping given the other kidnappings in the state and there is no need for the year when this is the only Papiri kidnapping.GothicGolem29(Talk)01:44, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Modify proposal I think just Papiri kidnapping fails to capture that this is a crime affecting a whole school marched off at gunpoint. Most kidnapping articles are about simple kidnappings of individuals. It should be along the lines of Papiri school kidnapping, Papiri mass kidnapping, St Mary's School kidnapping, St Mary's School mass kidnapping EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (talk) 03:07, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Papiri school kidnapping to assist readers searching, and to signify the scale of the kidnapping. Side note, why are school kidnappings such a relatively common occurrence in Nigeria? 9ninety (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2025 (UTC) Note: Updated vote below. 9ninety (talk) 11:31, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's a super profitable business. Here are some articles to start but there's certainly more resources around the internet:
Oppose. NOYEAR says years are included by default. This incident is too recent to be described in "historic perspective", so we would include the year. PARAKANYAA (talk) 20:49, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, however multiple sources state as one of the largest Nigerian kidnappings. Could do 2025 Papiri school kidnapping instead to satisfy both. JulDer Wiki (talk) 21:45, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
As far as I can tell, NOYEAR is an exception for events described in historic perspective, and a judgement call. WP:NCWWW says that the year should be included in the majority of cases. 9ninety (talk) 11:03, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
"In the majority of cases, the title of the article should contain the following three descriptors:
Support If a need arises in the future to disambiguate further (like by adding a year, or explain that it's about students), we can easily do so. For now, "Papiri kidnapping" works fine, and is much better than the current title. Renerpho (talk) 09:18, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Changing my vote to oppose, per PARAKANYAA and WP:NCWWW, which states that the year is a useful identifier even if this is the only Papiri kidnapping (see 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami as an example), and should be included in the majority of cases. Only kidnapping doesn't fully describe the scale of the event, per EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (compare the similar 2021 Zamfara school kidnapping and Edo train station kidnapping, both also in Nigeria for some reason). We should aid search and navigation rather than just indiscriminately making titles shorter. Neutral on Niger State or Papiri. 9ninety (talk) 11:31, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Dude, the 2011 earthquake and tsunami article uses 2011 because it is from a historic perspective, for that event happened 14 years ago, compared to this event which happened less than 15 days ago. "Only kidnapping doesn't fully describe the scale of the event"? What else happened? More than a kidnapping? Relating to WP:NCWWW, yes the event's title should tell when and where it happened along with what happened but Papiri kidnapping is enough, no one is gonna search "2025 Papiri kidnapping", we are in 2025, not 2026 or otherwise, the event did not happen years ago, the year is not needed at this time. LightandSalvation (talk) 14:53, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
You have this backwards, we only do not include the year when it is in historic perspective and decide it is best described that way (e.g. not recent and well known). Per NCWWW, "In the majority of cases, the title of the article should contain the following three descriptors:
The event did not occur 15 days ago, but six. Even if, per the policy on this, in the majority of cases, the title of the article should contain when and where it happened, in addition to what happened, current consensus is for the article to have a title stating where the kidnapping happened and what happened therein, not when, it's only been 6 days. LightandSalvation (talk) 18:02, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, forgot the less than, typo.
The consensus has not been determined yet, that's what we're here for, it will only be determined when this discussion is closed, so appealing to that is putting the cart before the horse. Consensus must still be backed by policy and guidelines. PARAKANYAA (talk) 18:04, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Even if proper consensus is determined once this topic is closed, right now, 23 people are in favour, 2 people are in favour of compromise or otherwise, and only two explicitly oppose, or in other words, 84% are in favour, 8% are in in favour of compromise or otherwise, and another 8% explicitly oppose. From those statistics, I don't think consensus will change to not moving the article. LightandSalvation (talk) 18:14, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
It is not a vote you are right but looking at the !votes right now I do not see anything in the reasoning that would suggest such a big gulf in numbers will be overturned(though if more people !vote oppose it could happen.) GothicGolem29(Talk)18:59, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
A majority of the support votes right now don't add anything or simply say per nom; such votes are typically disregarded. The main contention raised by opposers hasn't really been addressed by supporters — that this event is too recent to be in historic perspective. No clear reason for omitting school from the title has been provided either. 9ninety (talk) 03:35, 28 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
The per nom !votes in my view could be counted given they go off the noms logic. And I am not convinced the latter two points will be enough for the gulf in numbers to be overturned but we shall see. GothicGolem29(Talk)03:41, 28 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I was using it as an example for retaining 'school' in the title. If there were multiple kidnappings in Zamfara in the same year, then the year is not sufficient disambiguation, and it should use the month as well. The point remains that this event is too recent to be in historic perspective and satisfy WP:NOYEAR. 9ninety (talk) 13:44, 2 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
