Why does the article refer to "monkeypox " as the former name?
In May 2015, World Health Organization (WHO) suggested naming practices for new infectious diseases to prevent offense or economic impact on any groups. In 2022 the WHO endorsed mpox as the new name for monkeypox. See Mpox#Nomenclature

I understand that in medical cases, we should not be afraid of a graphic photo. But I would consider this page to be a very basic starting-point for people of all ages wanting to learn about mpox. Currently there is a photo of lesions on the penis, which could be shocking to either parents, sensitive people, or those viewing this page on a work computer. I think the photo could be swapped with another and not lose any meaning, while not shocking people or making them worry about getting in trouble from their employer. ~2026-26196-01 (talk) 20:01, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
"a potentially offensive image—one that would be considered vulgar, horrifying, or obscene by typical Wikipedia readers—should be included only if it is treated in an encyclopedic manner, i.e. only if its omission would cause the article to be less informative, relevant, or accurate, and no equally suitable alternative is available. Images should respect conventional expectations of readers for a given topic as much as is possible without sacrificing the quality of the article."
I think this image is "potentially offensive" and its omission would not "cause the article to be less informative [&c.]" because there are other images showing the symptom on other human organs. ~2026-39460-49 (talk) 08:47, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
