Request for Updates

Hi - I'm looking for help updating the Michael Meldman article. Mr. Meldman is now the Founder and Chairman (not CEO) as Brett White was appointed CEO in early 2022. Also the article repeatedly refers to "Casamigos tequila" but the company name is "Casamigos Tequila" (upper case "T"). Finally, based on the IRS 990 forms the Discovery Land Foundation has contributed over $30 Million since 2007, which may be material to that section of the article.

Disclosure - I am a paid contractor for the Discovery Land Company, and would greatly appreciate any help in getting the article updated. If there is another forum or format that would work better, please let me know. DiscoveryLandWiki (talk) 14:13, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Updated Edit Request

[edit]
  • Specific text to be added or removed:
  • Michael Meldman is the Founder and Chairman, not CEO.
  • The name of the company is "Casamigos Tequila" not "tequila"
  • The Discovery Land Foundation has donated over $30 Million since 2007
  • Reason for change - Out of date information and typos

Greetings from WP:BLPN. Per a similar request there, I've removed the CEO wording at the request of the subject's apparent agent, but mostly because no reliable third-party source appeared to support it. In regards to your edit request, businesswire is categorically unreliable for WP:BLP content. See BLPN and WP:MOS for caps guidance. Government sources are primary, and are depreciated in favor of (or in conjunction with) at least one secondary source. Same goes for company tax filings listed on a third-party site: it remains a mere restatement of a primary source about the company because there's no in-depth non-numerical coverage that makes up something biographically significant about this human being. And nobody even cares about the corp charity unless some reliable third-party source indicates it's somehow biographically significant for this subject. Cheers. JFHJr () 03:00, 21 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

NFL owners unanimously approved the Raiders’ partial ownership sale to businessmen Egon Durban and Michael Meldman

As for the transactions with Wagner, Durban and Meldman, the primary motivator appears to be Davis becoming more liquid. The value of the Raiders has skyrocketed since their relocation from Oakland to Las Vegas. Earlier this year, CNBC valued the franchise at $7.8 billion. While the exact terms are unknown, Davis earned hundreds of millions of dollars by selling stakes to Brady, Seymour, Wagner, Durban and Meldman collectively. 70.170.91.72 (talk) 21:04, 12 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Early and personal life

[edit]

Hello, I have a few proposals for this article.

For this request, I would like to look at Michael Meldman's personal life information. There is a citation needed tag in the Early life section and there is not any proper place for information on his life now, such as a Personal life section (which I will suggest below).

Please consider the following to the Early History section:

  • Change "Scottsdale, Arizona" to "Phoenix, Arizona"[1][2]
    • This is because Scottsdale is inaccurate. This should also fix the citations needed tag.
  • Add content: His father worked in insurance and his mother was a writer and book reviewer.[2]
    • This request is to fill out the section with more information.
  • Fix content in this section. Michael graduated from Stanford in 1981, not 1982, as per the Wall Street Journal.[2]
    • This request is to fix an inaccuracy
    • Please note this inaccuracy is also in the Career section and could be updated there as well.
  • At the end of the sentence, "He graduated from Stanford University in 1981." add a clause and new sentences: ", where he studied history and originally planned to be a lawyer.[2][2] He planned to be a lawyer but failed the Law School Admission Test. He later worked as a Blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.[3]
    • This is to add relevant background to this section.

Additionally, please consider adding a Personal life section for non-career information on Meldman. In this new section, I would like to propose the following text:

  • Meldman has three sons.[1]

As a disclosure, I do possess a conflict of interest as an employee of Discovery Land Company.

Thank you for reviewing this request. AmandaDLC (talk) 22:29, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello @User:AmandaDLC. I'd like to note that I do intend to review this some time in the future. Sorry for the long wait and thank you for the patience. Tarlby (t) (c) 03:55, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Done with tweaks. Tarlby (t) (c) 16:39, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Tarlby:! I agree with the tweaks you made. It recently has come to my attention that I requested something that is actually technically inaccurate, so I apologize. I have been informed that the LSATs do not have a pass/fail threshhold[1] so it quite literally is impossible for Meldman to have failed them. Apologize for this error. Can "Meldman failed the Law School Admission Test" be removed?
Thanks for the review AmandaDLC (talk) 19:07, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've decided to change it to "Meldman performed poorly" rather than just fail. Do you think this works? Tarlby (t) (c) 19:36, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Tarlby: While an improvement, I am still wondering if it should be removed since it is attributed to a quote about his opinion of his own performance. Thoughts?
Thanks! AmandaDLC (talk) 17:05, 12 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
It seems like an uncontroversial tidbit of his life. I'm fine with keeping it. Tarlby (t) (c) 17:53, 14 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Tarlby: I see what you mean! Perhaps a little context then on why this is an important detail to include is warranted? Otherwise it reads disjointed.
*Meldman attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him. His performance led him to begin working as a Blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.[1]

I also updated the source for this. Let me know what you think, thanks! AmandaDLC (talk) 17:26, 19 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ilovefood123123: since you are familiar with the last request, I wanted to see if you had any interest in jumping in here since Tarlby said below that their attention was on other things at the moment.

In summary, the request is in regards to the sentence "Meldman performed poorly at the Law School Admission Test and later worked as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe." in the Early life section. I am curious if you have any thoughts on removing it all together, since it is attributed to a quote about his opinion of his own performance.

If not, the specific request I was discussing with Tarlby was to replace the aforementioned sentence with "Meldman attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him. His performance led him to begin working as a Blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.[1]

  • The purpose of this is to add context so that the sentence is not disjointed.

Let me know your thoughts! AmandaDLC (talk) 20:36, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

While I can amend adding that "Meldman attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him.", I don't think I can replace the entire sentence as a whole. Ilovefood123123 (talk) 02:36, 5 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Ilovefood123123: Thanks! Just to clarify, since the blackjack dealer info is already in the current article, what you're suggesting is to:
Replace: Meldman performed poorly at the Law School Admission Test and later worked as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.
With: Meldman attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him and later worked as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.
Is that correct? If so, that sounds good to me! AmandaDLC (talk) 22:10, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, I meant as in, I would replace the sentence with, "Meldman performed poorly at the Law School Admission Test. He attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him and later worked as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe." ManducatingMouser (talk) 02:16, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh I see what you mean! I do think an attribution for the first sentence is needed, as "poorly" is subjective. What about adding an attribution of "said he"?
Meldman said he performed poorly at the Law School Admission Test. He attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him and later worked as a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe.
Let me know what you think! AmandaDLC (talk) 17:11, 11 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
In the citation it was cited that 'he "bombed the LSATs" and had to refocus his postgrad path', I don't think this is very subjective as grades are not subjective. I will however add saying that this was mentioned by him in an interview with Business Insider. ManducatingMouser (talk) 08:02, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Either way, I don't really see how he said "bombing the LSAT" was the best thing that happened to him in the article, perhaps you can point me to where it says that in the article or a different source that mentions it, thank you. ManducatingMouser (talk) 08:06, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
The full quote is from the CSQ source above and it is: “It was probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Meldman says.
The article explains how his performance made him "find a plan B" and this whole journey evolved into Discovery Land Company.
This kind of goes back to my original point of how if we include this LSAT thing, there needs to be full context to connect it to his career history or if it is too granular to include, should be cut all together.
Do you have any other thoughts or questions? AmandaDLC (talk) 16:33, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Career section

[edit]

{{edit COI}|a} @Tarlby: While you review my last note, I had another proposal for this article I wanted to present.

  • Add to the Early and personal life section: He was a member of Theta Delta Chi.[1][2]
    • This is to add some more background
  • In the phrase, "he began a career in residential real estate" I would like to suggest removing the word "residential".
  • Add to the Career section: His first position was as a commercial broker. Meldman financed his first property, a 300-acre lot in Portola Valley, California named Blue Oaks, through three friends in the 1980s.[3]
    • This request is to add early career history
  • Replace the sentence "In 1994, he launched Discovery Land Company with his first development, The Estancia Club, in his hometown of Scottsdale." with " In 1994, he launched Discovery Land Company. Two years later, with he opened his first resort development, The Estancia Club, in Scottsdale.[4]"
    • This is to add some nuance, as The Estancia did not launch until after two years of the formation of DLC.
  • Replace: "Since Estancia, Meldman and Discovery Land Company have developed 25 total clubs in the Pacific, Caribbean, Europe, and North America." with "Since The Estancia Club, Meldman and Discovery Land Company operates over 35 high-end residential communities globally, as of 2024.[5]"
    • This is for accuracy and grammar
  • Add to the Career section: Meldman credits his sons as his influence for his properties, as the locations are catered toward families.[2]
    • This is to provide context to the section
  • Remove: Meldman's employees include Jack Brooksbank, husband of Princess Eugenie of York.
    • This is unsourced and this does not seem like a detail necessary for a biography.

Done, it was sourced but I agree this is unnecessary namedropping. May review the rest, but if not other editors should feel free to take this. Rusalkii (talk) 20:17, 25 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Early life section

[edit]

Hi! Another editor (ManducatingMouser) and I were going back and forth on an update for this page, but it was an offshoot of something else and that request has been answered and out of the COI queue. So, I wanted to refresh this in its own discussion.

This pertains to the following sentence in the Early life section:

Meldman in an interview with Business Insider revealed that he performed poorly at the Law School Admission Test, saying that he had "bombed the LSATs".

Right now, it lacks a bit of context but adding more starts to go against WP:WEIGHT. So I wanted to present two ideas:

  • Rewrite this sentence to, "*Meldman attributed his poor performance on the Law School Admission Test as the best thing that happened to him. His performance led him to begin working as a Blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe."
  • This gives an explanation for why this poor performance is noteworthy and significant enough to include in this section.
  • Remove this sentence entirely
  • If this rewrite is now making it all too bloated, perhaps a removal is best for WP:WEIGHT reasons.

Editors, let me know what you think! AmandaDLC (talk) 19:19, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not done: A majority of the requested changes are currently written in a promotional tone. Please review WP:Neutral point of view and ensure you follow this before submitting any edit requests. Likeanechointheforest (talk) 13:25, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Likeanechointheforest Ok, I think I see what you mean. I am not sure there's a way to add needed context in a way that is not promotional, so I would like to present the suggestion of removing the information entirely. Thoughts? AmandaDLC (talk) 19:30, 12 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
