Edit request: source for the 'unrealistically high suggested price' sentence
[edit]This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
COI disclosure: I am the founder and CEO of Thrifle and have a conflict of interest, so I am proposing this edit rather than making it directly (WP:COI). My paid disclosure is on my user page.
This sentence has been tagged "citation needed" since March 2023. I propose sourcing it with a concrete, attributed example.
Please change:
The suggested price is sometimes unrealistically high, so the seller can appear to be offering a discount.{{cn|date=March 2023}}
to:
The suggested price is sometimes unrealistically high, so the seller can appear to be offering a discount. For example, a 2026 analysis of 157,170 Amazon products by the price-tracking site Thrifle found that many advertised discounts were not actually below the item's own 90-day average price.<ref>{{cite web |last=Ejaz |first=Haider |title=The Prime Day Verdict: We Audited Every Real Discount We Could Find |url=https://thrifle.com/reports/prime-day-verdict-2026 |website=Thrifle |date=6 July 2026 |access-date=10 July 2026}}</ref>
Rationale: this replaces a long-standing "citation needed" with a sourced illustration of the practice. Because the source is Amazon-specific and commercial, I have framed it explicitly as an example and attributed it in-text ("a 2026 analysis ... by ... Thrifle found"); I defer to editors on inclusion, wording, and due weight. M Haider E (talk) 19:24, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
Not done: I don't think the linked article is relevant to the list price concept. The Amazon example is about retail sales tricks, which is different from prices set by manufacturers. Deltaspace42 (talk • contribs) 21:36, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
