Misleading

[edit]

"Legal Drinking Age" is so misleading. Take USA and Germany: in the US, someone below the local legal drinking age *is* prosecuted (I suspect it's all or almost all states) if caught drinking. In Germany, nothing of the sort happens. So, if a 12-year-old opens a bottle of vodka and drinks from it, and gets caught, he gets fined or worse in most of the US, but only gets the bottle taken away in Germany (it's illegal to tolerate the consumption by minors, though the law, as far as I read it, is unclear who exactly this applies to). And would then get questioned who sold or gave him the stuff (or made it accessible to him). Same for buying: it's not illegal to purchase vodka at 12 in Germany, it's only illegal to *sell* it. In the US, both the seller and the kids buying are prosecuted.

Of course, Germany might be totally alone in not prosecuting kids here. Nah, I doubt that. --jae (talk) 06:17, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

It's the same in other european countries and I guess much others, some even don't adress alcohol comsuption and it's legal to consume it at any age, only the seller is persecuted. I think this article's name should be different. It does not adress "legal drinking age", more like "legal age to buy alcohol". --139.47.72.232 (talk) 10:51, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Well, it's a (typical for Wikipedia) very US-centered article. Americans assume that the whole world runs on their principles, so of course the whole world would restrict the sale and/or consumption of alcohol in the same way. jae (talk) 04:01, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Eritrea wrong

[edit]

WHO says drinking age in Eritrea is 25, not 18 71.17.68.109 (talk) 05:07, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

The penal code is cited and it says 18, article 267. The IARD says 18. Also the r/eritrea subreddit consistently says the age is 18. Also 25 is quite high. I guess some bars used to have signs that said nobody under 25, according to the subreddit, but it seems like the who got it wrong in this case. Mathnerd314159 (talk) 16:47, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Russia North Caucasus

[edit]

There are Alcohol prohibition laws in Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia, some of them limit during most times of day and for some it seems to be an all-out ban. Should this be mentioned under the Russia section since other countries with regional differences like this are mentioned? 199.212.41.26 (talk) 05:52, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

In the table it says iceland has no drinking age in private or public.

By what i found the table is correct but the map is wrong.

Iceland on the map should be "No minimum age to consume alcohol in public or private" instead of "Minimum age to consume alcohol in public and private"

Idk how to change it. Siggi147 (talk) 12:38, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
