Missing critical information
[edit]This entry is missing critical information about John Houston. He had personal relationships with both Howard Koch (friendship) and Olivia de Havilland (sexual). He gave both of them roles in the movie they arguably should not have had, which explains why Bette Davis was so flummoxed with her role and why the screenplay turned out so pallid and soapy. Combine that with the need to dillute the picy source material and you have the explanation for the weak result. Houston also had to water down Maltese Falcon, but he wrote the screenplay and cast without bias, for a much better result. The entry should be supplemented.
