Talk:Fungarium

I recently attempted to make the change, but it has been reverted. While some Fungarium are still housed within a Herbarium, the two kingdoms are now known to be separate. Some institutions have begun housing their fungi separate from their herbs for that reason. I'd like to clarify the distinction by creating a separate stem page for fungaria because they really aren't herbaria.

What is the proper procedure for turning this into a regular page rather than a redirect? Thanks in advance.

The procedure could be as simple as what you already tried: simply edit the page. However, creating your first article is harder than it looks. A good way to start is to work through the articles for creation process. This will walk you through the process of establishing if the topic is notable and adding references both to demonstrate the notability and verify the contents of the article. I reverted your first attempt because it was essentially a dictionary definition. The redirect points to an article with a good amount of content, much of which applies to fungaria, so it is preferable to a couple of lines that don't tell anyone anything except what a fungarium is. A crude assessment of notability can be to look at how many articles currently in Wikipedia mention "fungarium". Not many, which isn't encouraging. You might take a look at xylarium to get an idea of the sort of thing you should be aiming at as a (just about) worthwhile article on a subject related to herbariums.

An alternate approach to turning a redirect into an article is the split. This involves taking content from one article and extracting it to form a new article that was previously (usually) just a redirect to the original article, with some edits of course. This is usually done after discussion, which will determine whether the content is best combined or in separate articles. In this case, I don't know if there is enough content specific to fungaria in herbarium to be worth going that route. However, it is perfectly acceptable to discuss fungaria in the herbarium article, which gives you the opportunity to compare and contrast without excessive duplication and with good context for readers.
