[edit]Elobey Chico is a small island off the coast of Equatorial Guinea, 1st degree north latitude circle. It sits 6.5 km from the mouth of the Mitémélé River-and measures about 970 meters in North-south and 410 meters across, covering 19 hectares (equivalentes a 0.19 km²). It part of the volcanic island chain, is low-lying, and subject to erosion from tidal and storm damage, but protected by tropical forest and national park visitor regulation. Iit has consistently high temperatures averaging 24–30°C year-round, coupled with high humidity levels. Annual rainfall is substantial, often exceeding 2,000 mm, The island is now uninhabited but was once the de facto colonial capital of the Spanish territory of Río Muni. It is currently subject to the governance of Equatorial Guinea national authorities regionally based in Malabo, the capital on Bioko Island, under the executive branch led by the president. Culturally, Elobey Chico is tied to the Benga people, a Bantu ethnic group Between 1884 and 1926, Elobey Chico served as the seat of the regional government of a former colony called Elobey, Annobón, and Corisco. During those years, the island grew into a bustling little town. It boasted several important buildings, including the administrative headquarters. Companies from various countries, such as Spain, Portugal, England, France, and Germany, were also present, engaging in trade.
The island had a lighthouse to guide ships, docks for loading and unloading goods, and housing.
