Gender Dysphoria & Eating Disorders

Hi! We want to suggest adding a section on who is most affected by eating disorders and the factors that are often overlooked by physicians when diagnosing.

It is commonly known or believed that body image issues are closely related to gender identity. However for individuals in the transgender and nonbinary community, gender becomes a difficult topic that can lead to psychological distress. A specific type of distress that arises from a mismatch between sex assigned at birth and gender identity is gender dysphoria. This can further lead to body image issues therefore eating disorders. There are implications to this because clinicians oftentimes do not know what to look for in. And therefore may fail to detect eating disorders in gender diverse patients. This occurs in many cases because many doctors give calorie recommendations based on the Body Mass Index, which is not accurate for most individuals especially transgender individuals. Moreover, for as long as many can remember ED and ED treatment has been developed under the context of weight. This approach oversimplifies the complexity of body weight and therefore future approaches should instead look at health behaviors. KiwiCoco123 (talk) 19:54, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
