Digi International, Inc.

Digi International, Inc. is an American industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology company headquartered in Hopkins, Minnesota.[1] Founded in 1985[2] and public since 1989[3], Digi develops hardware and software used for machine‑to‑machine and IoT connectivity, and provides related services through several business units and subsidiaries.

History

Digi began in 1985 and initially produced multi‑port serial boards marketed for personal computers (often referred to as “DigiBoard”)[4]. The company went public in 1989.[5] Over time, Digi expanded from serial connectivity into embedded computing modules, wireless networking, cellular routers, and management platforms through internal development and acquisitions. Notable acquisitions include MaxStream (2006)[6], Sarian Systems (2008)[7], Accelerated Concepts (2018)[8], Opengear (2019)[9], and Ventus Holdings (2021)[10].

In April 2013, Digi settled a patent infringement lawsuit with U.S. Ethernet Innovations for approximately $1.525 million.[11] In 2022, Airgain’s subsidiary NimbeLink filed a patent suit involving certain Digi products; in May 2024, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota found all asserted NimbeLink patent claims invalid.[12][13]
