deleting or keeping (and correcting) Cryptographis?
[edit]I am not sure how to deal with this page. Cryptographis is a former genus of moths of the family Crambidae. Its type species, Cryptographis rogenhoferi Lederer, 1863 is a junior synonym of Palpita elealis (Walker, 1859).[1]
The species included have been placed in Cryptographis by a now blocked user (more precisely: their sockpuppet); the species have been added back in 2016, and without scientific justification. As Wikipedia is an important taxonomic source for various biodiversity databases, these erroneous species names have been included in the Catalogue of Life and accordingly in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
I started checking the current taxonomic statuses and generic placements for the species starting with A and B, following the Global Information System on Pyraloidea[2] (of which I am a co-author), and the results are as follows:
- Cryptographis abruptalis (Snellen, 1895): a junior synonym of Diaphania praxialis (Druce, 1895)
- Cryptographis aclista (Meyrick, 1936): a junior synonym of Diaphania argealis (Walker, 1859)
- Cryptographis advenalis (Lederer, 1863): a junior synonym of Cydalima perspectalis Walker, 1859
- Cryptographis albianalis (Hampson, 1918): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania albianalis
- Cryptographis albicincta (Hampson, 1899): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania albicincta
- Cryptographis albifascialis (Hampson, 1912): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania albifascialis
- Cryptographis albifuscalis (Hampson, 1899): a junior synonym of Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859)
- Cryptographis andringitralis (Viette, 1960): placed in its original genus Diaphania as Diaphania andringitralis
- Cryptographis angustimarga: a misspelling of angustimargo Warren, 1914, a junior synonym of Palpita elealis (Walker, 1859)
- Cryptographis antillia (Munroe, 1960): placed in its original genus Diaphania as Diaphania antillia
- Cryptographis argealis (Walker, 1859): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania argealis
- Cryptographis arguta (Lederer, 1863): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania arguta
- Cryptographis aroalis (Schaus, 1920): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania aroalis
- Cryptographis attigua (Hering, 1906): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania attigua
- Cryptographis auricollis (Snellen, 1875): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania auricollis
- Cryptographis auricostalis (Walker, 1862): a junior synonym of Diaphania argealis (Walker, 1859)
- Cryptographis aurogrisealis (Hampson, 1912): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania aurogrisealis
- Cryptographis beckeri (Clavijo & Munroe, 1996): placed in its original genus Diaphania as Diaphania beckeri
- Cryptographis brevilinealis (Schaus, 1920): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania brevilinealis
- Cryptographis brunneacollis (Schaus, 1920): now placed in Diaphania as Diaphania brunneacollis
- Cryptographis buscki (Dyar, 1914): a junior synonym of Diaphania hemicitralis (Hampson, 1912)
In essence: none of these name combinations with Cryptographis is valid, and Cryptographis itself is a synonym of Palpita. The question is: should we keep this page and correct all names like I started above (as they pop up in CoL and GBIF, which I heavily rely on in my daily work), or should we simply delete the page, as all those names show up in other combinations on other pages anyway?
