Regarding previous edits
[edit]Apologies for those. I agree that the way things were before works better, as while Lucy Letby might be featured and discussed a lot in reliable sources, the main topic is the baby deaths themselves. So I will not repeat those previous edits and will instead wait for the trial verdict before contributing further.

Maternity downgrade
[edit]I've changed the paragraph about the maternity department being downgraded to remove a reference to the highest dependency babies (which were being transferred to somewhere like Arrowe Park before this started) and to give the current situation.
The unit was temporarily reduced to Level 3 on 28 June 2016, initially while the RCPCH carried out an investigation,[1] but I don't know when it actually changed after then, or why it has its current unusual status (a Level 2 unit which doesn't normally care for babies born before 32 weeks). Lucy Letby case: role of management
[edit]"Hospital management did not report their suspicions to the police until May 2017, despite claiming that they were already having their suspicions about her conduct some 18 months earlier". The doctors indeed first had suspicions 18 months earlier. They raised their suspicions with management. Management investigated and found no evidence to support them. There were both internal and external investigations.
The source for the content I just quoted is an article in BMJ which states "But so is the fact that healthcare professionals raising concerns that Letby may have been behind these deaths were silenced and, worse still, were accused of bullying and threatened with referral to the General Medical Council." The accusation of bullying was supported by the internal hospital investigation. And one of the hospital consultants was even accused of lying. I think the BMJ article is an emotional reaction, published in the immediate aftermath of the convictions of Lucy Letby. The author is shocked by the crime and shocked by the apparent wrongdoing of management. It is an opinion piece, expressing a personal opinion.
Maybe the whole sentence should be deleted? Or replaced by a more neutral statement backed up by a more reliable source? Richard Gill (talk) 08:01, 12 August 2025 (UTC)
