Name of article

[edit]

It seems that the official English name recognised by the FCI for this breed is "Majorca Shepherd Dog". Should this article therefore be renamed to match? Miyagawa (talk) 09:56, 12 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

References

[edit]

I might do some work on this page – add independent reliable sources, expand/ce the text and so on. If I were to do so I would change the reference format to the list-defined system – references defined in the reference section, not in the text – and to hand-written refs (without cite templates), both changes for the sake of clarity and simplicity. I'll probably do that in a day or two if no-one minds, but will of course leave well alone if there's any objection. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:14, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Majorca Shepherd Dog

[edit]

@Justlettersandnumbers the term 'Majorca Shepherd Dog' is used by the FCI here

Although the name is not that common in RS compared to 'Ca de bestiar' I don't know what the title should be but I believe the name should be included in the lead as its just a translation of the Spanish name. Traumnovelle (talk) 19:40, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Aargh, thanks, Traumnovelle! I looked here but did not scroll down so did not see that we've linked to the Spanish version of the standard (this probably because there apparently is no English version?). What's best to do here? Any thoughts? Happy to revert my undiscussed move if you think that's best. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:50, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ca De Bestiar appears to the be the common name in English academic sources so perhaps that may be the better title?
My personal opinion is that 'Majorca Shepherd Dog' is the best name to use in English as its a translation of the Spanish title and is understandable to someone without any familiarity, although it does appear that Ca De Bestiar is more commonly used in sources and many breeds are known more commonly by the native name instead of a translation (typically French breeds). OK, Traumnovelle, I've moved it back for now. I agree that 'Ca de Bestiar' appears to be the name most used in scholarly sources and would suggest moving it to that title if there's agreement here to do so. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:20, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'll start a requested move in case someone else has anything else to add. Traumnovelle (talk) 19:40, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Majorca Shepherd DogCa de Bestiar – The name Ca de Bestiar appears to be the most common name by a wide margin in reliable sources per discussion above, although less reliable sources do tend to favour the name Majorca Shepherd Dog. Traumnovelle (talk) 20:06, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Support per nom (thanks to Traumnovelle for starting this!). I looked for English-language results (only) on GScholar. Here's what I found:
• "Majorca Shepherd Dog", 2 results
• "Perro de Pastor Mallorquín", 4 results
• "Ca de Bestiar", 18 results
I searched for the same three on JSTOR, but (unsurprisingly) got no hits whatsoever. Running the same searches (without the "English-only" option) on the library search of an alma mater gave 0, 0 and 6 hits respectively (all results are in English).
