The name of the team officially changed twice in the last 6 months, and the page was renamed accordingly. In the highly unlikely event that they change their name again, the page should be renamed then, too. It would be a strange situation to have the page named something other than the name of the team, with a note at the top that said "we used up the quota for renames so we have to keep the page name wrong, sorry about that". I share Ivey's sentiments; the team changing its entire identity does not require a seven-day discussion to confirm as such and it's best to move it rather than wait for an admin to allow it to go ahead; this is exactly the situation why I have pagemove permissions with confirmed changes, and any admin could easily reverse that decision without question. I certainly do not move pages for fun and this is the team's identity going further. Nathannah • 📮14:30, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
User:Ivey, User:Nathannah, neither of you seem to have read the article naming policy. There's no quota for renames, and NAMECHANGES allows for favouring recent sources to facilitate timely renaming as often as is justified by the policy. But you both seem to be suggesting that whenever the official name changes the article name needs to change too. There are good reasons that our policy does not support that. See the essay to which I just referred for a rationale for this policy. Or, if you disagree with the policy, invoke WP:IAR but be prepared to justify the exception. I'm curious as to why you would think that this should be an exception to the very well established policy. Andrewa (talk) 01:29, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
"If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match." Ivey (talk - contribs) 01:33, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. WP:NAMECHANGES says in part we give extra weight to independent, reliable, English-language sources ("reliable sources" for short) written after the name change. If the reliable sources written after the change is announced routinely use the new name, Wikipedia should follow suit and change relevant titles to match. If, on the other hand, reliable sources written after the name change is announced continue to use the established name when discussing the article topic in the present day, Wikipedia should continue to do so as well...
This policy then cites wp:BALL in explanation. On the other hand, when User:Nathannah claims this is the team's identity going further above, this violates wp:BALL. It may or may not be so, but we do not attempt to guess this outcome. Andrewa (talk) 03:28, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I moved it after ESPN.com confirmed the change in a story that night for an event that was planned well in advance to announce the change, which indeed is an independent, reliable and English-language source. I guess next time this exact same situation occurs, I'm supposed to ignore that confirmation (along with several other stories about it posted the same night from local and equally trusted media) and wait a few days, then take it to WP:RSPM, even though it is hardly controversial.
And as always, if I'm wrong, admins and others can override the decision. I have no problem with that. But calling Ivey and I out two months after it occurred smacks of looking for someone to lecture towards about something we have long forgotten. If I did anything wrong I apologize, but I feel the move was proper and very much uncontroversial. Again I do not use my page move powers lightly and if someone else wants to be BOLD and ask for a discussion, I do not have any problem with that and would have expected it that night, but it never came. I'm glad we're all in agreement. In the highly unlikely event that the team changes names again, and that new name is used by reliable sources, we'll move the page. If for some reason the reliable sources do not adopt the new name of the team, then we won't move the page. Ivey (talk - contribs) 13:13, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Ivey; I deal with these issues regularly editing television network articles and know how to move pages appropriately (though the 'I gotta be first' contingent there makes it hard to do properly), and my record of pagemoves is openly available; I always make sure to wait for confirmation before moving and there's a reason that non-admins are allowed to request the permission, so they can focus on other things and gnomes like us can do the busywork in their place.
