Difference between a promissory note and a bank note

Banknote conflated with paper money

A banknote originally was a note issued by a bank to a borrower when a loan was taken out. The bank issued a note because it had to keep gold on deposit for redemption. Issuing notes allowed the bank to leverage it's deposits.
